At this point, when referencing different people, Cain moves her hands in different directions to make note of different types of people, especially moving her hands from side to side to gesture to "the person next to you".

In life, sometimes we grow and no longer have need for some people in our lives anymore, we become different people and no longer desire to or need to have certain people in our lives. A friend of mine once told me "if you spend a long time with a certain group of people, you're not really growing".

Sister Magdalene Mary could be seen as a part of Sister Corita's personal "Hero's Journey", that being her call to adventure. If Sister Magdalene Mary had not done the things she has been described to have done, Sister Corita may not have reached the amount of people she did.

All the students in the school recounting their summers makes Sedaris feel alone at the school, as he has no companionship, not only due to his nationality and language, but also due to the age difference between himself and his peers. This sense of belonging will come later, as the students band together to make it through the class.

At this point, Sedaris shows how one person can make someone else doubt themselves. This is a part of life that most, if not all, people can relate to. As an appeal to Pathos, this works very well, as Sedaris pulls at the readers emotions, causing the reader to fell bad for him, while also getting a negative reaction towards the teacher.

Lucas, I agree with you very much with the idea of Sedaris making the classroom a dark place. What Sedaris goes on to do, in addition to your point, is shows the light that comes from that darkness, the light being the interaction with his classmates, making for a very compelling addition to Sedaris's memoir.

By showing this interaction between his fellow students, David Sedaris shows something that is one of the most common experiences that people can experience when in a difficult situation: finding hope with the ones you are with. Sedaris takes time to point this out because if it were not for is fellow classmates, it is possible that less of them would have made it through the course, without help from each other.

This idea of the difference between "regulars" and "honors" students is repeated many times throughout the talk. This idea is very prevalent is most schools across the country, where students who are deemed as "honor students" are given more praise than those known as "regulars". The "honors" are told to lead, while the "regulars" are shown to be followers. Yes, it is important to reward those students who show academic excellence, but it should not be at the expense of all the others.

This interaction with the Irishman shows how different society was between America and Europe at the time. In Europe, slavery had been banned for a while, while in America, slavery was at its height. The reaction of the Irishman shows how slavery disgusts him, and how he thinks it should be abolished, like in his homeland.

The children are kind to Frederick because their parents have not corrupted them to the idea of slavery. Using their kindness and inexperience in society, Frederick befriends the children and receives their help with learning.

Compassion is essential to the experience of life. Without compassion there can be no joy, and without compassion, society would likely fall into chaos. Morrie appeared to have a greater grasp of compassion than a great many of us, which is what made him a great professor who was beloved. He realized that without compassion, the would would be a much darker place. He references this ideology later, when he says the sixties, with all the hippies spreading love, was a better time to live in than more modern ones.

Purpose can be defined as many things, from a job, to your family, to your religion, purpose is what drives a person to keep going, just like Morrie's purpose is to help Mitch.

I understand that people were angered by the death of George Floyd, I was too. It is a right for people to protest what they see as unjust; however, it is not a right to destroy businesses and communities out of that anger and for the people that do these things to pretend that they are some sort of hero. If you want to change the system, do not commit criminal acts, like the arson seen in this image.

Tavian, when you mentioned holding things in until they burst, I have some experience with that. There was a point in my life where someone had hurt me very badly to the point where I hated them. Then I spoke with another person and they explained to me how holding that in hurt them, not me. So I can confirm what you said; that holding emotions in is not something you should do.
