Remembering Invisibility

In this letter the narrator recognizes the extent of his own visibility. By becoming a prominent figure in the fight for equality the narrator has lost the sense of invisibility he had upon arriving to New York. He is now extremely visible. The person who sent this letter also has gained a sense of invisibility over the narrator.

After reading the section on finding humor, I realize this is one habit I 100 percent have mastered. My whole family has this habit or at least a bit of it. Growing up my dad always initiated humor and thrived off of having humorous interactions. Now, I can find myself loving a good laugh or joke. I also am normally the first to laugh at my own mistakes. I never get to caught up on messing up because I normally just laugh at myself. Especially in sports, when I mess up a drill at soccer, or hit a hurdle at track I am normally already laughing at myself before anyone else has the chance to. I feel this habit has allowed me to be more comfortable and okay with making mistakes. For me mistakes are a way to learn and grow.

"to know a game it must be played"

When I think about learning a game, I do know that by playing it I will learn it better. However; I never truly realized all I was doing when playing the game. I watch my own moves, as well as others (visual). I listen to the reactions of other players when certain moves are made (auditory). I also feel the part and pieces that go along with the game (tactile). I become aware of certain positions of the game pieces or my body (kinesthetic). All of these sensory pathways allow me to better understand the best ways to play the game.

Joy Harjo talks about countering the false assumptions and educating others on how indigenous people should not be seem as inferior and should be recognized as humans. In the poem she write "we are all related in this story," I feel the author feels the acknowledgement of indigenous people as humans and equals is a very important step that needs to be made.

"clarify the dark and make us all feel like dancing" : tone

This sentence contradicts the tone. When you see the words "clarify the dark," you feel like the author is setting a deep, heavy, and maybe even sad or angry tone. However; the next part of the sentence "makes us feel like dancing," suggest a joyous tone. One that is very uplifting and happy.

Reading that this was written in 2002 is slightly shocking, for it seems very fitting for 2021. "Hope to the future," this seems to be one of the statements many are holding onto going into 2021. After all 2020 entailed there has been a lot of hope centered around 2021.

Accepting change in 2020

I think now more than ever people are finding it easier to accept change. At the beginning of last year our world was flipped upside down and things have been constantly changing ever since. Every time we began to adapt to a new normal things changed again. While change may still be difficult, it is defiantly a lot easier than before. If someone is not at least a little bit used to change by now then they must really struggle, which is completely possible. However, I do feel change is now expected and more accepted by many after all last year entailed.

If I am being honest here lately I have found myself wishing I was a little girl again. I wish to go back to the times where all I cared about was when I would get to eat ice cream or watch my favorite shows. Back then everything was simple I woke up, I ate, I played with toys, watched tv, ran errands with my parents, and the best part was I did not have to make any big decisions. It's crazy how quick thing change. One minute I'm dancing around in princess dresses and then I'm in high school, and now I'm a senior trying to figure out how to make a huge life decision. It's times like now when I am trying to decide where to go to college, what to study, what is going to be best for me when I wish I was a the little girl in the princess dress again. Yet with all this unknown comes new discoveries and with all these choices I find myself needing to make, I am discovering more and more of my true identity every day.

Measuring success

Growing up I would measure my success by the letter I saw on my report card or the one circled on the top of my paper. Over the past two year I have learned that while the letter can be important, it is not a good way to define success. I now define my success from what I actually learned and what I gained from an experience. When reading articles and books for classes I no longer strive to simply finish them but rather to understand them and gain something from them. If one simply reads a book to get a good grade but then forget all about it than was there any purpose for reading the book? If one reads a book and learns a great number of lessons but does not receive an A on the assessment did they still succeed?

Before going any further into this article I had to laugh upon reading this. In my family one cannot go more than 10 minutes without being disturbed, except for in the middle of the night. (In some cases it still happens) While is is annoying at time and can drive us all insane, I find myself feeling very weird if it doesn't happen. When nobody comes into my room to talk or my dad isn't running down the hallway acting like a goof life doesn't seem right. As much as it can annoy me I find myself wanting to be disturbed when it isn't happening.

On the second page of this article starting with "can't understand why we would be satisfied," and ending with "and I want you to," the word listen is used 11 times. I may have missed one or two but regardless this is a large number for one single action. The repetition of this word emphasizes the importance of this word and the gravity behind the action itself. One must listen to learn, to grow, and to become the best version of themselves.

Change is something in my life that challenges me. I am not a huge fan of it especially when it is a big change. I have one of these big changes coming up in my life soon, just like every senior. I have to decide what to do after high school and immerse from the grade school bubble I have been in since I was six. While I am excited for this change I am also extremely nervous and scared. This causes me to avoid talking or listening to conversations about it. I sometimes tell myself if I do not talk/hear about it I do not have to think about it or deal with it at the moment. Which is true, but it does not change the fact that it will happen in a few short months.

"if you say it with confidence then others will not question you"

This is a phrase I have been told a lot in life. I do find it to be true, if I am ever asked a question I do not know the answer to and I reply back acting as if I am 100 percent certain what I am saying it true then nine times out of ten people believe me. While this may be a good tacit, if it is used in the manner to avoid admitting confusion it can be hurtful. A lot of times I use it in a joking manner or in a situation of little importance, however if I used this to justify everything I did and believe and never accepted being wrong, I would never learn and thus be stuck.

One of the keys to knowing what one truely believes is having one's beliefs challenged. If a person still believes what they claim to believe after someone challenges their ideas then it is a belief. However, if someone can make a person change their beliefs by simply posing an alternative view then was it truly a sound belief to begin with?

Abby,
I agree it does seem that Mr. Klemper is angry with how his son has turned out. This could be a result of his son not turning out to be the child he had imagined. Mr. Klemper does not see his son's accomplishments as real accomplishments thus leaving him searching for a way to be proud of his son.

Mr. Klemper seems to be searching for a way to like his son. He comes into the visit on edge and begins demoting his son's life. When he finds out this piece of information about his son he becomes elated because he feels he can finally be proud of him. In retrospect there is probably lots of things he could be proud of his son for. However, these are probably things Mr. Klemper has accomplished easily. Therefore, when his son achieves them he does not view it as an accomplishment.

What Mr. Klemper does by referring to Jack as his son's "Keeper"

Mr. Klemper refers to Jack and his son's keeper right off the bat. This inference allows the audience to learn how Mr. Klemper views his son. He demotes his son's capabilities when he infers he needs a keeper in his life. Mr. Klemper also dismisses Jack's statement that he is his son's friends. This shows Mr. Klemper does not view his son the same way he views Jack. He views his son as less than Jack and does not believe his son could have a friend that is like Jack. This shows how he is demoting his son because of his disability, thus not giving him the same opportunities he would give someone without disabilities.

Resilience is the capability to recover quickly from the difficulties life throws one's way. This poem written by Alex Elle has the title of Resilience. Elle uses this poem to emphasize the power resilience can hold. In "Defying Definition," by Shaun David Hutchinson. Hutchinson stresses the importance of the definitions people give words. In this poem Elle gives resilience power. Through this poem she gives resilience the meaning of getting back up, remaining hopeful, growing, being, and standing despite all life throws at someone. This poem gives resilience power to improve lives and give people a meaning to the word.

I also noticed the first line gave the image of rain. Rain creates a somber feeling in itself. We normally curl up inside when it rains. For me rainy days make me feel down and cause me to be lazy because of the dark skies and chilled winds. The picture of rain set the tone for the beginning.

Imagery and Symbolism

Sexton uses a large amount of symbolism in this poem. She starts off with saying the ants are bouncing off her window and then that they are in great pain. While on the topic of depression and mental illness we have been focusing on it leads me to assume the window is posing as an obstacle for the ants in their battle against their mental illness and the pain they are feeling is the pain of trying to keep fighting against their illness.
