Summary of Chapter 4

Chapter 4 discusses the lab process in which Henrietta’s cervix cells were prepared, sterilized and incubated. Gey’s assistant, Mary, performed this procedure and labeled the test tubes “HeLa” (the first two letters of Henrietta Lacks). Mary assumes that this is just another monotonous day of culturing cells that die anyways until she notices “little rings of fried egg white slots” bottoming each tube. Meanwhile, Henrietta is released from the hospital after various invasive tests and radiation and told to call if her symptoms worsen or should any problems arise. In the cell laboratory, the “HeLa” cells begin growing and expand to fill the capacity of the space Mary allows. Unlike the other cells, which normally die in the lab, these are multiplied, growing and thriving with food and the heat of the incubator.

In this chapter we also learn about how exactly cells are cultivated and prepared- apparently Gey and his wife have been trying to perfect a culture medium for years.

I enjoyed reading this article because not usually do we see the virus associated with optimism, pride, strategy and success. I feel that the U.S. could have done a better job handling the outbreak of COVID-19 and being so democratic likely put us at a disadvantage. While it these times are unprecedented, it is okay and actually quite respectable to look to other countries (experiencing the same thing) for inspiration.

I think that especially with COVID we have become even more reliant on our phones for social connection. I wonder what affect this will have on phone usage in the future...Will it get worse?

I completely agree. The days I am on Zoom I feel like I'm in a trans. Its weird getting off from being on a screen the whole day and interacting in the real world

I worry about what my generation will do when we are parents. Will we be less engaged and distracted by our phones? Will we be snapchatting pictures of our kids?
