Before she became sick, Henrietta would bring her daughter Elsie with her to Clover, but after her doctors recommended that she be institutionalized, Henrietta visited her each week at Crownsville State Hospital. After a month and a half, Henrietta finally told her cousins about the cancer. Her tumor had vanished from the radium treatments, and in her words, she was fine. But due to an unceasing period following her second radium treatment, Henrietta began going to the hospital daily for radiation treatments, and walking to Margaret’s house each night after to be picked up by Day. She learned that a side effect of her treatment was infertility, and said that she never would’ve agreed to this if she had known. Henrietta got sicker and weaker as the days passed, and slowly watched the skin on her abdomen become more and more charred with each treatment. This was the “blackness” spreading all inside of her. *Skloot also gives us the first description of Henrietta’s physical features in this chapter, writing that she had walnut eyes, straight white teeth, full lips, a square jaw, thick hips, muscular legs, and rough hands.
