20% and 300% are both incredibly high numbers to increase in. These are the type of numbers that you don't want to see at all when talking about suicide.

The last paragraphs show a dramatic shift in Hsu's attitude towards the family.

Before, Hsu was just doing her job and was getting blood from the family members. Towards the end, she realizes that they are humans too. This is a recurring theme. Doctors that are working on Henriettas' family often realize that they are working on more than just patients. They are working on people.

I think this paragraph sums up a lot of the book and most of this chapter. Henrietta's family members were not fortunate enough to be the smartest people. However, they are surrounded by doctors and students that are incredibly smart. This often leads to a disconnect between the two groups, and the family does not always understand what is going on.

After Bobbette finds out that Henrietta's cells are being used by large quantities of people from her friend's brother, she begins to become angry. Bobette then chooses to run home and proclaim that part of Lawrence's mother is alive. Lawrence then calls hospitals from all around, looking for a piece of his mother that is alive. This led to a conversation at Yale University about how to stop the HeLa contamination. Victor McKusick, a scientist that had helped to publish Henrietta's name initially, offers a solution. Because Henrietta's husband and children were still patients at Hopkins, he could extract DNA from them to compare their DNA to the HeLa cells. Because there was still no required consent form for drawing blood, doctors drew blood from the clueless children. Later on, Deborah began to worry that she would get the same cancer that her mother had. Doctors assured her that she would not and gave her a textbook with Henrietta's picture in it, but Deborah couldn't understand it. This leads to Susans' guilt because she believed the children really should have known what was going on, but they didn't.

For the second time in this chapter, a person notices Henriettas painted toenails. Similar to the last time this happened, this stirred up emotions. Sadie knew that Henrietta would have never let her toenails get that way. I think this reiterates that Henrietta was more than just a medical patient; she was a person.

WIth Henrietta dead, doctors were not allowed to take tissue samples without a living family member's consent. Because of this, Gey and his lab quickly reach out but were immediately turned down. When they asked Day a second time, they explained that these tests could benefit Lacks children someday. Ultimately, with this on his mind, Day changes his mind and allows for the autopsy. After the doctors were granted permission and began the autopsy, Mary noticed Henrietta's bright red nail polish. This small detail made her stop to think about how Henrietta was a real woman and more than just a body. Soon after the completion of the autopsy, Hopkins sends the body back to Clover for her funeral. Another person, Sadie, noticed Henriettas chipped nail polish and began to cry hysterically because Henrietta would have never allowed that to happen. During her burial, a wild storm ensued. The storm was so rough that it even killed one of her cousins and family members believed it was Henrietta expressing her anger in the afterlife.

This concept of taking some of the cervix from Henrietta's body without her knowledge directly goes against several medical ethics principles. This completely surpasses the respect for human dignity and human rights. It is not professional, and the doctor has no intent to honestly report what is going on with this patient.

I believe that gender norms are changing, and they are changing at a rapid pace. Men are seen as angry and violent currently, but they have nowhere to release their feelings. Women have several ways to get rid of difficult emotions, and it is openly accepted in society, but it is the opposite for men. This ultimately builds rage and "toxic masculinity."

Although abusive men are a significant problem, the average man's mental health is deteriorating, and this is the only hotline that I have ever heard of for men. Many men are uncomfortable opening up with their significant other because it often turns around and then becomes a fight, so they quietly suffer instead. Obviously, this leads to anger, depression, anxiety, and other mental issues of this sort. If men's mental health becomes more critical in society's eyes, abusive households will become less prevalent.
