They have also taken the next step in their creation of a global campaign. https://nowcomment.com/documents/264208?scroll_to=2382411 https://nowcomment.com/documents/264208?scroll_to=2382411 Tue, 16 Mar 2021 10:26:03 -0500 This repetition of the word "understanding" may have been an appeal to the many doctors and scientists in the room. Deborah, and the whole Lacks family, wanted to learn about their mother but were never given the opportunity. https://nowcomment.com/documents/262545?scroll_to=2374994 https://nowcomment.com/documents/262545?scroll_to=2374994 Thu, 11 Mar 2021 09:43:54 -0600 The Lacks family did not receive a good education. They never fully understood what happened with their mother because they didn't know basic biology. Like when Skloot was talking to Lawrence and he didn't know what a cell was. https://nowcomment.com/documents/262545?scroll_to=2374991 https://nowcomment.com/documents/262545?scroll_to=2374991 Thu, 11 Mar 2021 09:41:45 -0600 Pattillo saw all of the important work that HeLa cells were doing and wanted to pay tribute to Henrietta's contributions. Food waste includes products that are deemed unusable. Misshaped and discolored produce is a big source of preventable waste. It also ties to the increase in food production https://nowcomment.com/documents/263352?scroll_to=2374648 https://nowcomment.com/documents/263352?scroll_to=2374648 Thu, 11 Mar 2021 00:09:10 -0600 The EPA has created a model to guide people in reducing food waste. There are many pathways that lead to the wasting of food. https://nowcomment.com/documents/263352?scroll_to=2374642 https://nowcomment.com/documents/263352?scroll_to=2374642 Wed, 10 Mar 2021 23:59:15 -0600 There is no cooperation between producers and distributors of food. These large discrepancies are only fueling food waste. Now, with an increase in production, more food will likely be waste. https://nowcomment.com/documents/263352?scroll_to=2374640 https://nowcomment.com/documents/263352?scroll_to=2374640 Wed, 10 Mar 2021 23:57:07 -0600 Food waste comes in many forms, one of the most prevalent being food that is disposed of when it goes bad. https://nowcomment.com/documents/263352?scroll_to=2374637 https://nowcomment.com/documents/263352?scroll_to=2374637 Wed, 10 Mar 2021 23:55:07 -0600 Food waste is something that the whole world needs to work on. It will be improved only if people work together to find more effective and efficient methods of conducting business in the food and restaurant industry. https://nowcomment.com/documents/263352?scroll_to=2374631 https://nowcomment.com/documents/263352?scroll_to=2374631 Wed, 10 Mar 2021 23:40:59 -0600 Food that has not been served can be used to prepare other meals. Some restaurants have found value in what is often considered scraps and leftovers. First, she meets Sonny who warns her of the family's walls built up against people like her who are trying to learn about their mother. Sonny then brings her to Lawrence who talks to her for a while before deciding that it would be ok for the rest of the family to talk with her. When Skloot is talking with Lawrence, she finds that he doesn't know a lot about HeLa cells. He knows that they came from his mother's cancer and are used in science, but he doesn't know what a cell is or how the cells are being used to help science. Sonny returns to Lawrence's house with Day. They all sit down and encourage Day to share Henrietta's story. He has done this many times before, so he skips to the cancer and gives the same informational spiel he had given to many reporters before. It is when he starts to talk about the lack of information he received that the whole family digresses into a conversation on the illegal and immoral use of unknowing Black people in medical trials. We hear some of the stories and legends that the Lacks kids grew up with. We also hear about some of the real-life horror stories that come from these trials at Johns Hopkins. Thu, 04 Mar 2021 23:29:18 -0600 Skloot goes on to describe some of the real events that led to so much of the Black community fearing the hospital. The trials mentioned were primarily on Black children. https://nowcomment.com/documents/259680?scroll_to=2366831 https://nowcomment.com/documents/259680?scroll_to=2366831 Thu, 04 Mar 2021 23:11:19 -0600 Johns Hopkins started off as a charitable resource for the surrounding Black community but had since devolved into something that the Black community feared. https://nowcomment.com/documents/259680?scroll_to=2366792 https://nowcomment.com/documents/259680?scroll_to=2366792 Thu, 04 Mar 2021 23:11:19 -0600 Day and his children have distrust in doctors because of the lack of transparency with Henrietta. https://nowcomment.com/documents/259680?scroll_to=2366769 https://nowcomment.com/documents/259680?scroll_to=2366769 Thu, 04 Mar 2021 22:54:17 -0600 Even though, the family knows Henrietta's cells are being used for scientific advances, they know nothing about the specific work that the cells are doing. They only know community gossip. https://nowcomment.com/documents/259680?scroll_to=2366762 https://nowcomment.com/documents/259680?scroll_to=2366762 Thu, 04 Mar 2021 22:48:50 -0600 Despite Henrietta's trying to protect her family from her illness, they were still deeply affected. Lawrence, the brother who was supposed to know the most about Henrietta, had blocked that time period from his memory because it had been too painful. https://nowcomment.com/documents/259680?scroll_to=2366745 https://nowcomment.com/documents/259680?scroll_to=2366745 Thu, 04 Mar 2021 22:42:20 -0600 Here Skloot is referring to the many familial layers, and barriers, that reporters and scientists have to go through to hear from the Lacks family. Throughout the book, Skloot has hinted at the family being hurt in previous encounters with the press. https://nowcomment.com/documents/259680?scroll_to=2366702 https://nowcomment.com/documents/259680?scroll_to=2366702 Thu, 04 Mar 2021 22:36:20 -0600 All of Henrietta's children, with the exception of her son Lawrence, don't really know anything about her. They only know what other people have told them, that she was kind and generous, and that she was the woman behind the HeLa cell. https://nowcomment.com/documents/259680?scroll_to=2366610 https://nowcomment.com/documents/259680?scroll_to=2366610 They know more about the accomplishments of her cells in science than they do about her. Thu, 04 Mar 2021 22:32:46 -0600 The patriarchy is most often seen as something against the success of women. What we often don't realize is that it affects men's lives just as much, if not more. https://nowcomment.com/documents/253914?scroll_to=2316464 https://nowcomment.com/documents/253914?scroll_to=2316464 Fri, 05 Feb 2021 10:28:28 -0600 This is an interesting solution to a very prevalent problem. The people doing this kind of work often either volunteer or are paid very little.
