It comes into question here how much of Granny's decision was actually based on Jane kissing the boy at the gate. Had she already decided to marry Janie off in the past due to her age, and Janie's kissing was just the catalyst that pushed her?

Granny says she would not harm Janie directly after she slapped her violently. In addition, she's doing Janie quite a bit of emotional harm at the moment, despite her soothing. This gives the reader an insight into both Nanny's temper, and her definition of harm.

Logan Killicks's character

It calls into question what kind of person Logan Killicks is that he's already been asking after 16 year old Janie for some time now, especially taking his age into consideration. It also says something about Granny and her viewpoint on the situation that she sees Killicks as a good enough person to give her Janie too. Does she not see this old man coming after her young granddaughter as slightly disturbing? Or is she that desperate to marry her off?

Jane's entrance into womanhood

Womanhood and its context in society is starting to emerge as a theme within the book. Janie pushes at the boundaries, definition, and constraints of her womanhood. Here, Granny has saddled Janie with her interpretation. She has decided that Janie is now a woman. It calls into question how the reader themselves defines womanhood. Would they agree that Janie s now a woman? Why or why not?

I think a lot of creatives have these perfectionistic tendencies where they just want to keep working and working on a piece, whether that be a painting, a poem, or a chapter of a novel. This never finished feeling has been the conversation topic of many a day at the Inklings Club at the library.

For some, writing can serve as a form of therapy. It can also be a way to puzzle out and think over a situation. Mr. Harris's poems seem to have been about things he has experienced that have upset him. It could speak to the depth of his distress that Mr.Harris is writing about these situations now. A little bit of pathos.

Readers can have many different interpretations of a piece. Many time it can be different from what the author intended, but I think that's part of the beauty of poetry and literature. The readers start to see pieces of themselves and their own lives in stories.

Most of us can relate to this, we start to fail in one subject, maybe one we were particularly good at, and start to doubt ourselves in others. Sedaris is living in Paris and from his earlier anecdotes, it is apparent he knows at least basic French. Therefore, his doubt does not spring from a failure in the area he mentions, like asking for directions, but from a different, but related, sphere of his life.

This connects well to the other two pieces we have read about education by Malcom X and Frederick Douglas. Knowledge is power and privilege, but it should be a right, a gift. The education system and our government have been accused of falling minorities. Much of these two systems were built either without minorities in mind, or to directly prohibit their growth and success. " I hear education systems are failing but I believe they are succeeding at what they're built to do." "No wonder so many of my people spit bars because the truth is hard to swallow." "But reading does not matter when you feel your story is already write, either dead or getting booked." The system has failed us before, it is failing now, and will continue to fail us well into the future unless we change it. Ignorance fails to serve as an excuse when we willing put the blindfold on.

As soon as I had learned to read I was like this too, always squirreled away with a book. No manner of coaxing or threatening could get me to go outside when there were books to read. Once I had been given this gift, there was no going back. In his insatiable addiction to reading, I find a common place with Douglas. However, I was never at threat of a beating or other brutal punishment. Despites these consequences hanging over Douglas's head, he continued on. This situation reminds me of Patricia Polacco's book Thank you, Mr. Falker.

Who teaches us empathy and love but those around us?

Jack reacts in quite a shocked manner. While the solution Reena offers may seem simple, its not simple for Norman. He really values his keys, worries over them. Later in the film its quite a big moment for him to gift a set of keys to Shiela So while the solution may have seemed simple, it wasn't simple for Norman to enact. He values the much more than anyone else might. The fact he is willing to trust someone else with this treasured item surprises Jack.

Lucien's family had institutionalized and ostracized him. Lucien tries to come off like his father's visit isn't a big deal. "Don't have a cow." He even tries to excuse his father's neglect "He's a very busy man." He goes on to try and spotlight the good in his father, "He always sends me candy on my birthday."

"..when his schedule permits.." Is a son, loved by his father, someone to "fit" into a schedule?" His choice of words and phrases reveal a lot about their relationship

I think this scene could bring up an important conversation about family.
For me at least, family is not defined by blood. It is defined by those who are there for you, and who love and support you regardless. I would argue that Jack is family to Barry more than his own father is.

I think this scene provides a good snapshot of Jack and Lucien's relationship; that of a carer and their charge. Jack isn't patronizing. He talks one-on-one with Lucien about his testimony. He is attuned to Lucien's idiosyncrasies. He grabs his hand without hesitation and knows to count to help Lucien jump from the rock. Jack doesn't dominate the conversation or dismiss Lucien either. He explains when he needs to and listens.

I disagree with you here. I think "No more appetite to eat" is exactly what the author meant. When someone is sick or nauseous, they have no appetite because they feel unwell. When someone is anxious, depressed, etc.. they can not feel the need to eat. Yes, the author could be making the choice not to eat, but who wants to eat when they truly don't feel hungry and have no appetite? When you're mentally unwell it physically affects the body.

It is hard to "Always be strong" when someone cannot eat or sleep. The mind is part of the body and the body influences the mind. Studies show that when someone is anxious, stressed, worried, depressed, etc.. it has physically, tangible effects on the body. It is never "all in your head." Just as being sick can cause someone to feel gloomy or be snappish, being sick of mind or heart can lead to this physical aching and restless.
