Had she already decided to marry Janie off in the past due to her age, and Janie's kissing was just the catalyst that pushed her? Fri, 27 Aug 2021 09:24:39 -0700 Contrasting actions and words https://nowcomment.com/documents/231819?scroll_to=2526232 https://nowcomment.com/documents/231819?scroll_to=2526232 Granny says she would not harm Janie directly after she slapped her violently. In addition, she's doing Janie quite a bit of emotional harm at the moment, despite her soothing. This gives the reader an insight into both Nanny's temper, and her definition of harm. Fri, 27 Aug 2021 08:45:22 -0700 Logan Killicks's character https://nowcomment.com/documents/231819?scroll_to=2525979 https://nowcomment.com/documents/231819?scroll_to=2525979 It calls into question what kind of person Logan Killicks is that he's already been asking after 16 year old Janie for some time now, especially taking his age into consideration. It also says something about Granny and her viewpoint on the situation that she sees Killicks as a good enough person to give her Janie too. Does she not see this old man coming after her young granddaughter as slightly disturbing? Or is she that desperate to marry her off? Sun, 29 Aug 2021 18:01:09 -0700 Jane's entrance into womanhood https://nowcomment.com/documents/231819?scroll_to=2525975 https://nowcomment.com/documents/231819?scroll_to=2525975 Womanhood and its context in society is starting to emerge as a theme within the book. Janie pushes at the boundaries, definition, and constraints of her womanhood. Here, Granny has saddled Janie with her interpretation. She has decided that Janie is now a woman. It calls into question how the reader themselves defines womanhood. Would they agree that Janie s now a woman? Why or why not? Fri, 27 Aug 2021 08:02:11 -0700 Names https://nowcomment.com/documents/263250?scroll_to=2377389 https://nowcomment.com/documents/263250?scroll_to=2377389 One again the author calls out the name of a student. This gives the poem a personal feeling. Jaylin is not just some kid. He has a name, a face, a family, and a story that are all his own. Wed, 17 Mar 2021 11:59:48 -0700 This is something I sympathize with. https://nowcomment.com/documents/263250?scroll_to=2377372 https://nowcomment.com/documents/263250?scroll_to=2377372 I think a lot of creatives have these perfectionistic tendencies where they just want to keep working and working on a piece, whether that be a painting, a poem, or a chapter of a novel. This never finished feeling has been the conversation topic of many a day at the Inklings Club at the library. Because of this situation, a large group of people have begun updating their wills. They are going into this with a strong feeling they may not come back out again. Wed, 17 Mar 2021 11:59:48 -0700 "Hidden" reference https://nowcomment.com/documents/263250?scroll_to=2377324 https://nowcomment.com/documents/263250?scroll_to=2377324 This good be a good link back to the "Cultural literacy" poem by Mr.Harris where children shout "not us" at books that do not represent them. Wed, 17 Mar 2021 11:59:48 -0700 Immediate joy https://nowcomment.com/documents/263250?scroll_to=2377318 https://nowcomment.com/documents/263250?scroll_to=2377318 Its a big deal for an author to get an agent. You can see the immediate joy on Mr.Harris's face when DGK mentions this. Its a little infectious. Wed, 17 Mar 2021 11:59:48 -0700 "Isn't age appropriate" https://nowcomment.com/documents/263250?scroll_to=2376754 https://nowcomment.com/documents/263250?scroll_to=2376754 People have a funny idea of what is and isn't age appropriate. Mr.Harris learned to fear cops before he could write, and yet his own second grade students are not to allowed to learn how to grieve over a lost member of their community, a member that wouldn't have been that much older than them. Wed, 17 Mar 2021 11:59:44 -0700 "Intended and unintended dehumanization in the classroom" https://nowcomment.com/documents/263250?scroll_to=2376712 https://nowcomment.com/documents/263250?scroll_to=2376712 It is outrageous that at any modern point a classroom would be described as dehumanizing, let alone intentionally dehumanizing," Wed, 17 Mar 2021 11:59:44 -0700 "I try to write about it a lot" https://nowcomment.com/documents/263250?scroll_to=2376678 https://nowcomment.com/documents/263250?scroll_to=2376678 For some, writing can serve as a form of therapy. It can also be a way to puzzle out and think over a situation. Mr. Harris's poems seem to have been about things he has experienced that have upset him. It could speak to the depth of his distress that Mr.Harris is writing about these situations now. A little bit of pathos. Decades into the future, this could provide a very clear and very human snapshot. Wed, 17 Mar 2021 11:59:44 -0700 "What I'm hearing you say." https://nowcomment.com/documents/263250?scroll_to=2376655 https://nowcomment.com/documents/263250?scroll_to=2376655 Readers can have many different interpretations of a piece. Many time it can be different from what the author intended, but I think that's part of the beauty of poetry and literature. The readers start to see pieces of themselves and their own lives in stories. Wed, 17 Mar 2021 11:59:44 -0700 "Ripe age of 19" https://nowcomment.com/documents/263250?scroll_to=2376645 https://nowcomment.com/documents/263250?scroll_to=2376645 We learn a little bit about this author here. A little humor is injected in with the phrase "ripe age of 19." Through deduction, we can probably assume that Mz.Johnson is a handworker. She got a prestigious membership at a young age. Wed, 17 Mar 2021 11:59:43 -0700 Adaptability https://nowcomment.com/documents/263250?scroll_to=2376636 https://nowcomment.com/documents/263250?scroll_to=2376636 It is very encouraging to see creative communities adapt to the difficult situations the pandemic has brought on. They started a video meeting and have people text their questions in. Where he has lived plays an important role in his poetry work. His degree is also interesting considering his work. Wed, 17 Mar 2021 11:59:43 -0700 Baby sister https://nowcomment.com/documents/263250?scroll_to=2376594 https://nowcomment.com/documents/263250?scroll_to=2376594 There is a certain love than an older sibling has for a baby sister, coupled with a fierce urge to protect them. This line tugged on my heartstrings a little. Wed, 17 Mar 2021 11:59:43 -0700 Irony https://nowcomment.com/documents/263250?scroll_to=2376587 https://nowcomment.com/documents/263250?scroll_to=2376587 There is irony in walking past homes where air conditioning is a flick of a button away when you have to carry a fan home from school to get any cool air. This could also be a reference to the historical segregation of poorer black neighborhoods and richer white neighborhoods. Wed, 17 Mar 2021 11:59:43 -0700 Not Us https://nowcomment.com/documents/263250?scroll_to=2376566 https://nowcomment.com/documents/263250?scroll_to=2376566 There is a deficit in the amount of black children portrayed in books, especially children's' books. We saw a graphic organizer a few months ago in class that displayed this, where animals receive more representation than children of color. Wed, 17 Mar 2021 11:59:43 -0700 Depressing https://nowcomment.com/documents/263250?scroll_to=2376556 https://nowcomment.com/documents/263250?scroll_to=2376556 It is extremely depressing how schools beat the love of learning and daydreaming out of kids. If I had only been exposed to the poetry I was taught in school, I would probably hate poetry, which is sad to think because writing poetry is something I am passionate about. Wed, 17 Mar 2021 12:00:00 -0700 Italicized https://nowcomment.com/documents/263250?scroll_to=2376539 https://nowcomment.com/documents/263250?scroll_to=2376539 This italicized text most likely displays inner thought. As a stand alone, it could be read a couple of different ways. One way could be relief. There are certain of this country where these kids could be shot on their way home. Wed, 17 Mar 2021 12:00:01 -0700 Names https://nowcomment.com/documents/263250?scroll_to=2376526 https://nowcomment.com/documents/263250?scroll_to=2376526 The author adds a layer of personal interaction by calling out several kids by their names. He could've just said "the girl" or "the boy" but he didn't. That isn't to say the names are not made up to hide the children's identities. Wed, 17 Mar 2021 11:59:42 -0700 Another possible interpretation. https://nowcomment.com/documents/263250?scroll_to=2376516 https://nowcomment.com/documents/263250?scroll_to=2376516 The wings could symbolize the metamorphosis of leaving childhood to go into adulthood. It could also symbolize the fragility of childhood and innocence. Wed, 17 Mar 2021 11:59:42 -0700 Echo chamber https://nowcomment.com/documents/263250?scroll_to=2376511 https://nowcomment.com/documents/263250?scroll_to=2376511 The author mentions that he "thought Glenville was the whole damn universe." There is often this phenomenon where people create this bubble around themselves, often just around their immediate surrounding areas. They either do not know or struggle to sympathize with those outside that bubble. That, or they may not care or have the ability to. Wed, 17 Mar 2021 11:59:42 -0700 Appeal to Pathos https://nowcomment.com/documents/263224?scroll_to=2373757 https://nowcomment.com/documents/263224?scroll_to=2373757 Here we gain sympathy for Sedaris and his fellow students. They are trying very hard, but have begun to doubt themselves immensely. In this doubt, they have created a new social group, one where half-formed sentences and jumbled grammar are understood and accepted. Wed, 10 Mar 2021 08:49:54 -0800 Metaphor-Rhetorical Choice https://nowcomment.com/documents/263224?scroll_to=2373755 https://nowcomment.com/documents/263224?scroll_to=2373755 "The world opened up." Thu, 11 Mar 2021 21:38:55 -0800 Pathos and Sympathy https://nowcomment.com/documents/263224?scroll_to=2373750 https://nowcomment.com/documents/263224?scroll_to=2373750 Most of us can relate to this, we start to fail in one subject, maybe one we were particularly good at, and start to doubt ourselves in others. Sedaris is living in Paris and from his earlier anecdotes, it is apparent he knows at least basic French. Therefore, his doubt does not spring from a failure in the area he mentions, like asking for directions, but from a different, but related, sphere of his life. Wed, 10 Mar 2021 08:46:02 -0800 Title-Humor and Hint https://nowcomment.com/documents/263224?scroll_to=2373746 https://nowcomment.com/documents/263224?scroll_to=2373746 The title alludes to what comes in the following paper. Sedaris is a language learner, and a langue learner often mixes their grammar up. This also details what Sedaris might want-to talk pretty one day in his learned language. This little story adds background and humor. Wed, 10 Mar 2021 08:38:24 -0800 "My People" https://nowcomment.com/documents/262700?scroll_to=2373227 https://nowcomment.com/documents/262700?scroll_to=2373227 This connects well to the other two pieces we have read about education by Malcom X and Frederick Douglas. Knowledge is power and privilege, but it should be a right, a gift. The education system and our government have been accused of falling minorities. Much of these two systems were built either without minorities in mind, or to directly prohibit their growth and success. " I hear education systems are failing but I believe they are succeeding at what they're built to do." "No wonder so many of my people spit bars because the truth is hard to swallow." "But reading does not matter when you feel your story is already write, either dead or getting booked." The system has failed us before, it is failing now, and will continue to fail us well into the future unless we change it. Ignorance fails to serve as an excuse when we willing put the blindfold on. No manner of coaxing or threatening could get me to go outside when there were books to read. Once I had been given this gift, there was no going back. In his insatiable addiction to reading, I find a common place with Douglas. However, I was never at threat of a beating or other brutal punishment. Despites these consequences hanging over Douglas's head, he continued on. This situation reminds me of Patricia Polacco's book Thank you, Mr. Falker. We don't magically becoming wiser and bigger and stronger when that special date rolls around. We're still scared and young, growing and new to the world. The child inside us will always be there, if only we listen to the knocking. While the solution Reena offers may seem simple, its not simple for Norman. He really values his keys, worries over them. Later in the film its quite a big moment for him to gift a set of keys to Shiela So while the solution may have seemed simple, it wasn't simple for Norman to enact. He values the much more than anyone else might. The fact he is willing to trust someone else with this treasured item surprises Jack. Thu, 05 Nov 2020 07:53:40 -0800 Barry and his father. https://nowcomment.com/documents/240008?scroll_to=2179232 https://nowcomment.com/documents/240008?scroll_to=2179232 Lucien's family had institutionalized and ostracized him. Lucien tries to come off like his father's visit isn't a big deal. "Don't have a cow." He even tries to excuse his father's neglect "He's a very busy man." He goes on to try and spotlight the good in his father, "He always sends me candy on my birthday." "..when his schedule permits.." Is a son, loved by his father, someone to "fit" into a schedule?" His choice of words and phrases reveal a lot about their relationship I think this scene could bring up an important conversation about family. For me at least, family is not defined by blood. It is defined by those who are there for you, and who love and support you regardless. I would argue that Jack is family to Barry more than his own father is. Jack isn't patronizing. He talks one-on-one with Lucien about his testimony. He is attuned to Lucien's idiosyncrasies. He grabs his hand without hesitation and knows to count to help Lucien jump from the rock. Jack doesn't dominate the conversation or dismiss Lucien either. He explains when he needs to and listens. Fri, 03 Sep 2021 06:47:16 -0700 Not so deep a meaning https://nowcomment.com/documents/238756?scroll_to=2169499 https://nowcomment.com/documents/238756?scroll_to=2169499 I disagree with you here. I think "No more appetite to eat" is exactly what the author meant. When someone is sick or nauseous, they have no appetite because they feel unwell. When someone is anxious, depressed, etc.. they can not feel the need to eat. Yes, the author could be making the choice not to eat, but who wants to eat when they truly don't feel hungry and have no appetite? When you're mentally unwell it physically affects the body. Wed, 28 Oct 2020 07:07:38 -0700 The mind and the body. (Word choice?) https://nowcomment.com/documents/238756?scroll_to=2169425 https://nowcomment.com/documents/238756?scroll_to=2169425 It is hard to "Always be strong" when someone cannot eat or sleep. The mind is part of the body and the body influences the mind. Studies show that when someone is anxious, stressed, worried, depressed, etc.. it has physically, tangible effects on the body. It is never "all in your head." Just as being sick can cause someone to feel gloomy or be snappish, being sick of mind or heart can lead to this physical aching and restless.
