Saying if God thinks about them no more than she does, they are a lost ball in high grass. Basically meaning they have no meaning and no one can find them. All they do is gossip, it does not benefit anyone only harms them Fri, 27 Aug 2021 18:52:42 -0400 Gossip https://nowcomment.com/documents/231819?scroll_to=2528197 https://nowcomment.com/documents/231819?scroll_to=2528197 These words give example of the power gossip can have and how much envy these people have for her and what she has. This also shows how invested these people are when it comes to Jaine her life and/or lifestyle. People were so filled with envy, they used this women and her looks to connect with others. Creating conversation over her appearance and her personal life. In a cruel way, she brought this town closer together because they all had one thing in common. Envy. The author uses an interesting approach when describing setting in this passage. The reader can visualize hard workers coming home, sitting on their porch just cooling down after a long day. Or many it was a mother sitting down and watching her kids play until the sun went down. Sitting on a porch and watching the sun fall symbolizes the end of the day. In writing, and any type of literature or readings, we tend to only focus on the author instead of looking at all the other aspects that contributed to the making of the reading. Only focusing on the big name written on the cover. Wed, 17 Mar 2021 14:59:50 -0400 When do you know if a poem is done? https://nowcomment.com/documents/263250?scroll_to=2377504 https://nowcomment.com/documents/263250?scroll_to=2377504 Harris admits he's never really sure. He asks other writers to confirm if its done and then he "finishes it," but stating a poem is never really finished. Its interesting to see how even poets need a second opinion in their own writings. Harris gives his time up for his students. It's been stated teachers are updating their wills. Knowing the risks, but willing to do anything to be able to teach their students. Quartez truly gives children hopes in achieving their dreams. Wed, 17 Mar 2021 14:59:49 -0400 "How can we use your work to be better in the classroom." https://nowcomment.com/documents/263250?scroll_to=2377489 https://nowcomment.com/documents/263250?scroll_to=2377489 Quartez responds by saying his content is helping kinds finding their identity. In seeing black literature, it may allow students to understand and create a connection between themselves and Quartez. His books is not just his words, its kids voices. This leaves Harris in disbelief. Quartez's literature is truly impacting this world for the better. They truly care for their students, only wanting the best for them, nothing less only more. The mother provides her daughter with very little money and space but is rich in knowledge and a passion for reading. Teaching her daughter to dive into books as a possible escape. Wed, 17 Mar 2021 14:59:59 -0400 "The Hardest worker" https://nowcomment.com/documents/263250?scroll_to=2376766 https://nowcomment.com/documents/263250?scroll_to=2376766 Even though tiffany was categorized by her teacher as "the hardest worker in the class," she was was held back for not passing. She also wanted to give up in school, empty out her school desk and break apart her crayons. She's only seven years old and already the stress of school and the hard tests are getting to her. Wed, 17 Mar 2021 15:00:02 -0400 Exhaustion https://nowcomment.com/documents/263250?scroll_to=2376454 https://nowcomment.com/documents/263250?scroll_to=2376454 Even a second grade student experiences exhaustion and feels worm out just after doing a state test. This second graders experience allows the readers to relate, knowing the difficulties of state testing, which could make someone feel drained or worn out. The author also gives us a visual in writing "she crawled back inside the computer," showing how distraught this student feels. Wed, 17 Mar 2021 15:00:01 -0400 "Alive" https://nowcomment.com/documents/263250?scroll_to=2376446 https://nowcomment.com/documents/263250?scroll_to=2376446 The title of this poem, contributes to the poem by showing the children are truly "alive." They are able to "dive into glitter," "play hide-and-seek," and use their imagination to change bean bags into plastic pools. These children are encouraged to express themselves in his classroom and stay "alive." Wed, 17 Mar 2021 14:59:42 -0400 Descriptive Language https://nowcomment.com/documents/263250?scroll_to=2376424 https://nowcomment.com/documents/263250?scroll_to=2376424 Using descriptive words to describe a poster located in his school. By using these descriptive words, the readers are able to visualize his school. It may be one of the reason the father doesn't want his son to go there due to the unsanitary conditions. Wed, 17 Mar 2021 14:59:42 -0400 Alive https://nowcomment.com/documents/263250?scroll_to=2376381 https://nowcomment.com/documents/263250?scroll_to=2376381 "my black students are alive." Quartez states how he simply allows his students around fifteen minutes to just be themselves. Play, relax, connect. Due to the pandemic, I feel as if many of us have lost that time in allowing ourselves to just relax, and grow whether its physically, mentally, or emotionally. Wed, 17 Mar 2021 14:59:41 -0400 Tamir Rice https://nowcomment.com/documents/263250?scroll_to=2376372 https://nowcomment.com/documents/263250?scroll_to=2376372 "as if children are too young to know, when they have been shot." In Quartez's poem, the student and teachers were demanded to take down pictures of Tamir and letters written to his mother. The reason behind was due to the fact it was considered "wasn't age appropriate." Quartez's poem expresses the trauma this kids have experienced, and the life they've grown up in. In regards to this he later states, "the worlds tries to kill us, our beauty always survives." Wed, 17 Mar 2021 14:59:41 -0400 "Not smiling on the first day of school" https://nowcomment.com/documents/263250?scroll_to=2376351 https://nowcomment.com/documents/263250?scroll_to=2376351 Quartez was informed not to smile on his first year on teaching, due to the fact that he may be taken as "passive." "Whether I should smile on the first day of school," was inspired by this experience. Not being able to express his own emotions, is an act of dehumanization. Wed, 17 Mar 2021 14:59:40 -0400 Thematic Categories https://nowcomment.com/documents/263250?scroll_to=2376338 https://nowcomment.com/documents/263250?scroll_to=2376338 Before reading the poem, Quartez gives the audience a short summary behind the writing of "Ocean." Mentioning that even though may parents want the best for their child, majority of parents are "not in a position, economically, to do that." This may tie into one of the Thematic Categories of ECONOMICS, due to the fact that money is tight, which causes may parents to only be able to afford a public education. Wed, 17 Mar 2021 14:59:40 -0400 "Ocean" https://nowcomment.com/documents/263250?scroll_to=2376326 https://nowcomment.com/documents/263250?scroll_to=2376326 Ocean, one of Quartez Harris's poems, describes a father unable to offer his son the world due to lack of resources and money. The father is forced to depend on the education system that failed them, to teach his son. "I pray he can swim as far as his hand chooses to reach." The word choice this author uses as contributes to this idea that the ocean is huge, the father wants nothing more than for his son to be able to "swim as far as his hands choose to reach." Quartez uses different a relation of the ocean throughout the entire poem. " Wed, 17 Mar 2021 14:59:40 -0400 "I don't think I can write away these issues." https://nowcomment.com/documents/263250?scroll_to=2376262 https://nowcomment.com/documents/263250?scroll_to=2376262 When asked what it is like being an educator in the midst of all the uncertainty, Quartez Harris first address his concerns/fears over the safety of his son and his students. Quartez states his idea of trying to write upon this particular subject, but responds, "I don't think I can write away the issue the only think I can do is bring voice to them." Meaning the pandemic unfortunately cannot change, but through writing Quartez hopes to bring light to all the issues this global pandemic has caused. Wed, 17 Mar 2021 14:59:39 -0400 Simile https://nowcomment.com/documents/263250?scroll_to=2376211 https://nowcomment.com/documents/263250?scroll_to=2376211 The author uses a simile to compare his swinging skills, when he was younger, to be as high as a moths. "I used to swing high as moths." Wed, 17 Mar 2021 15:00:01 -0400 In addition https://nowcomment.com/documents/263224?scroll_to=2374465 https://nowcomment.com/documents/263224?scroll_to=2374465 This may also be tied into a more PSYCHOLOGICAL thematic category, in dealing with having the right mindset when working hard to achieve something. Without determination or enthusiasm, there is no way we would be able to stick to something challenging like learning a new language. This is exactly what David does, his passionate spirit drives him to become a better student, which is what he achieved when he was finally able to understand a sentence in french. Wed, 10 Mar 2021 20:29:57 -0500 Tone https://nowcomment.com/documents/263224?scroll_to=2374373 https://nowcomment.com/documents/263224?scroll_to=2374373 I completely agree, its seems as if David is trying to allow us to connect with the text and understand the challenges and obstacles one can face when learning a new language. David has changed the tone of his story from a more humor, silly tone to now a more earnest tone. Wed, 10 Mar 2021 19:39:10 -0500 David and his classmates https://nowcomment.com/documents/263224?scroll_to=2374347 https://nowcomment.com/documents/263224?scroll_to=2374347 Upon arriving early to class, David began to feel intimidated by his fellow classmates who were "young, attractive, and well-dressed." Writing how "everyone spoke what sounded to me like excellent French." However, when experiencing his class for the first time, David realized, him and his classmates had a lot in common. All of the student "left class foolishly believing that the worse was over." Ever student was torn apart when telling the teachers their likes and dislikes. Wed, 10 Mar 2021 18:50:11 -0500 Purpose https://nowcomment.com/documents/263224?scroll_to=2373560 https://nowcomment.com/documents/263224?scroll_to=2373560 David desires to be knows as something more than a "lazy kfdtinvfm." He wants a new identity as the "hardworker" or the "cut-up." His determination and passion for the french language drove him to dive into his studies, even when he felt as if his french was not improving, he carried on. His work payed off in the end when David was able to understand his teacher, even though she were insulting him. "It's a small step, nothing more, yet its rewards are intoxicating and deceptive." David Sedaris is showing us the rewards for not giving into defeat. How learning a language was challenging, but rewarding. David conveys to readers to believe hard work pays off. Wed, 10 Mar 2021 11:42:29 -0500 Tone https://nowcomment.com/documents/263224?scroll_to=2373555 https://nowcomment.com/documents/263224?scroll_to=2373555 Mentioning the rewards of understanding "every word that someone was saying," David Sedaris is enthusiastic about understanding anything even if it's just a small sentence. As David writes, "it's a small step," he doesn't fully understand, and still struggles, but, it's better than nothing. David is passionate about learning the French language, which leads the readers to see an ardent tone. Wed, 10 Mar 2021 20:29:57 -0500 "Dedicated to building, yet only breaks me down." https://nowcomment.com/documents/262700?scroll_to=2369769 https://nowcomment.com/documents/262700?scroll_to=2369769 As Malcolm London later uses repetition of the world "stressful" to describe the pressures school can have on a person, school ultimately can break us down and destroy us. He finds irony in the educations purpose to build students up, when in reality school is a prior reasons why many of us are breaking down. The pressure of becoming a "honors" student, numerous amounts of assignments, the dangerously armed bullies, etc. Stating, "This is a training ground to sort out the Regulars, from the Honors." Comparing it to a training ground, not seeing the joy learning can have. Like when Malcolm X taught himself to read, stating he felt truly free, but for some students it feels as if school is breaking them. Fri, 03 Sep 2021 09:47:26 -0400 "Oceans of adolescents come here to receive lessons, but never learn to swim." https://nowcomment.com/documents/262700?scroll_to=2369764 https://nowcomment.com/documents/262700?scroll_to=2369764 A great deal of people believe students are in fact learning the material and lessons being given, but are not being taught necessary information they can apply to every day life. However, this is not always the case. Teachers like Morrie and Mr. Hundert, who teacher their students how to "swim" and continue to effect their students lives for the better. Teaching them real life experiences instead of just lessons and labeling students as "regular" or "honors." Mon, 08 Mar 2021 07:59:31 -0500 Consistency https://nowcomment.com/documents/260954?scroll_to=2355510 https://nowcomment.com/documents/260954?scroll_to=2355510 Even though Malcolm's journey in "learning to read," has been difficult as stated in line 5, "I became increasingly frustrated." Staying consistent in his reading, proved for him to be efficient and pushed him to grow more in his studies. By being, "so fascinated that I went on-I copied the dictionary's next claim." Fri, 26 Feb 2021 08:31:08 -0500 Theme https://nowcomment.com/documents/260279?scroll_to=2352269 https://nowcomment.com/documents/260279?scroll_to=2352269 I agree with Ella in regards to finding the theme of "Thank you Ma'am," by Langston Hughes. Mrs. Jones expresses empathy and gives pity to Roger, even stating, "I have done things, too, which I would not tell you, son-neither tell God, if he didn't already know." She is able to understand Roger's situation because she too made mistakes she's not proud of. She takes him in, feeds him, and hopes he would learn from his mistakes. Tue, 20 Apr 2021 22:01:28 -0400 Age is just a number https://nowcomment.com/documents/260283?scroll_to=2351228 https://nowcomment.com/documents/260283?scroll_to=2351228 Sandra Cisneros's "Eleven," presents the idea to the readers that age is just a number, writing you aren't just 11, you eight, you're five, etc. Sandra Cisneros writes similes to compare age as an onion or rings inside of the tree, but our past ages stay with us. Morrie, for example, in "Tuesday's With Morrie," does not envy Mitch for his strength, good health, or age because he was once that age too and will always be in spirit. Mitch also experienced being a child again, needing help walking and using the restroom. Age is just a number. Wed, 24 Feb 2021 12:12:29 -0500 Familiarity https://nowcomment.com/documents/258458?scroll_to=2334133 https://nowcomment.com/documents/258458?scroll_to=2334133 In the very first line, the author states the garden is just how she remembers, but in the last line of the stanza she writes how everything has changes since she was last there. I believe this stanza is showing how even if something changes, the memories last a lifetime. Like Morrie in "Tuesdays with Morrie," he may not look the same, or be able to do as much as he used to but his spirit is still the same. Fri, 12 Feb 2021 11:54:01 -0500 Comparison https://nowcomment.com/documents/258458?scroll_to=2334116 https://nowcomment.com/documents/258458?scroll_to=2334116 Harryette Mullen compares the "bleached back from a tree" to "a scroll of ancient wisdom." Her comparison may be an example of a pareidolia, which occurs when we see objects in trees, or faces in clouds. The author sees the bleached bark as a scroll, that she's unable to read. Fri, 12 Feb 2021 12:33:05 -0500 "I refuse to lose" https://nowcomment.com/documents/258111?scroll_to=2334098 https://nowcomment.com/documents/258111?scroll_to=2334098 June Jordan shows the audience her determination to end the violence, and to choose safety. Refusing to lose or get used to the idea of being physically abused all because of her gender and/or race. She refused to lose the flame/spark she carries. She's driven to never lose her identity Fri, 12 Feb 2021 11:59:11 -0500 "frozen with fear" https://nowcomment.com/documents/246973?scroll_to=2301301 https://nowcomment.com/documents/246973?scroll_to=2301301 A popular saying/phrase we tend to hear is "frozen with fear." Our emotions being are so loud, we aren't able to move/talk. According to Morrie,"its just fear." We can not let fear control our lives. Its just fear, nothing more nothing less Fri, 29 Jan 2021 08:57:52 -0500 Control https://nowcomment.com/documents/246973?scroll_to=2301220 https://nowcomment.com/documents/246973?scroll_to=2301220 I feel as if this paragraph gives us a glimpse of why Mitch may work so much. Afraid of not being in control and afraid of change, but work allows him to be in control. Fri, 29 Jan 2021 08:39:32 -0500 Overcrowding and overcapacity https://nowcomment.com/documents/246060?scroll_to=2265124 https://nowcomment.com/documents/246060?scroll_to=2265124 This is a devastating example of how much the global pandemic has effected not just those infected with Corona, but the family's lively hoods. Like Brianna mentioned, "it shows how much the world has been impacted by this wretched year." The pain and hurt on this women's face gives us a glimpse of this horrid year. Fri, 08 Jan 2021 08:44:13 -0500 Unknown paradise https://nowcomment.com/documents/246060?scroll_to=2265098 https://nowcomment.com/documents/246060?scroll_to=2265098 I completely understand where your coming from Carter, it seems as if its been nearly a century since we were able to gather, physically touch, or just being less than 6 feet apart. It almost looks like an unknown paradise. Fri, 08 Jan 2021 08:35:29 -0500 Results of Covid https://nowcomment.com/documents/246060?scroll_to=2260335 https://nowcomment.com/documents/246060?scroll_to=2260335 I also am curious to see if/when things will "return back to normal" with big crowds and no masks. It seems as if we've been wearing masks forever and forget there was a time when no one used masks. Wed, 06 Jan 2021 08:55:26 -0500 A cease-fire took place in Benghazi, Libya. Causing the location to become "unrecognizable." This images gives us a glimpse of Libyan and how it truly is an exhausted country. To capture this picture a car was needed to drive by. https://nowcomment.com/documents/246060?scroll_to=2260270 https://nowcomment.com/documents/246060?scroll_to=2260270 In 2020, I feel as if many of us have lost our light or spark, causing many of us to be dark and gloomy like the streets of Benghazi. Waiting and hoping for more light in 2021. Fri, 08 Jan 2021 13:39:45 -0500 Michael Jeter https://nowcomment.com/documents/240008?scroll_to=2186751 https://nowcomment.com/documents/240008?scroll_to=2186751 I recognize Michael Jeter from the film "Patch Adams." In this particular movie Michael is featured as a patient, named Rudy, in the facility alongside Patch. Rudy is even the reason for Patch's nickname. His roles in "Patch Adams" and "The Boys Next Door" are remarkable as he gives insight on what a person with disabilities can experience. Fri, 06 Nov 2020 12:50:23 -0500 Barry and Lucien https://nowcomment.com/documents/240008?scroll_to=2185802 https://nowcomment.com/documents/240008?scroll_to=2185802 During this film it seems as if Barry is closest to Lucien. Barry has more of a reserved, loner personality and tends to keep to himself. Lucien, however, seems to be wearing rose-colored glasses, and usually surrounds himself with other people. This may be an example of people saying "opposites attract." Thu, 05 Nov 2020 20:42:51 -0500 Forgotten Birthday https://nowcomment.com/documents/240008?scroll_to=2185544 https://nowcomment.com/documents/240008?scroll_to=2185544 Even when Rena mentions a "forgotten birthday", Jack doesn't even realize it was his own birthday she was mentioning. Jack gives all his attention and so much more to "the boys next door." This conversation shows just how selfless Jack really is. He's not just their "keeper" as Barry's dad mentioned, he's their friend. Towards the end of the film when Arnold, Norman, and Lucien boarded the train, Jack collapsed into Rena's arms and began sobbing. Even while arriving back to Barry's room, Jack gently took off his shoes and covered Barry with a blanket. After Barry's episode at the golf course, Jack stayed with him. When Lucien spoke the the court, Jack was there holding his hand. He always listened to Arnold talk about Russia, and Norman go on and on about his keys and or donuts. He doesn't care about his birthday all he cares about is "the boys next door." The downside of this is he doesn't give himself time to himself or his wife which, for example, lead them in having to go to a marriage counselor. He tends to prioritize Arnold, Lucien, Barry, and Norman instead of himself and his wife. Thu, 05 Nov 2020 19:34:14 -0500 Jack and Rena https://nowcomment.com/documents/240008?scroll_to=2185499 https://nowcomment.com/documents/240008?scroll_to=2185499 While saying "Rena and I may go somewhere, we haven't done that in a while," gives us insight on his relationship with his wife. Even he knows how little time he and Rena spend together. This phrase ties into the future conversation with Rena and Jack when Jack forgets his birthday and Rena mentions he's been distant. Fri, 06 Nov 2020 14:03:33 -0500 Promise land https://nowcomment.com/documents/240008?scroll_to=2184236 https://nowcomment.com/documents/240008?scroll_to=2184236 "First thing I'm going to do is buy a ticket to Russia." Throughout this whole film Arnold mentions his desire to go to Russia. Is Neil Sedaka the main reason Arnold wants to go or is it something bigger? Maybe its more of a promise land because it seems as if every time something stressful or bad comes up he tends to mention Russia even at the end when Jake said said he was leaving Arnold, Norman, and Lucien. They all went to a train station to leave and go to Russia, where all their problems might go away. Thu, 05 Nov 2020 10:07:08 -0500 Arnold's anger https://nowcomment.com/documents/240008?scroll_to=2184105 https://nowcomment.com/documents/240008?scroll_to=2184105 "But we hate you." This scene Jack strongly implies he is not leaving because he doesn't like them, but because he needs to move on and let them go. When Arnold hears this he says, "but we hate you." In my opinion Arnold is showing his anger towards the idea of Jack leaving not Jack himself confusing anger vs. hate. Or Arnold may be trying just to make Jack leaving easier by saying "we hate you." For Norman, Arnold, and Lucien, however, Mark compares them to "fender bender." The Hindenburg disaster caused 35 fatalities, while fender benders are just minor collisions. Comparing the two shows just how extreme schizophrenia can be. Much like the Hindenburg explosion, an episode of schizophrenia can happen randomly and feel as if one's being engulfed in flames. That small fact may have been forgotten until around 16:26 when Norman seems a "rat" in the apartment that looks a lot like a pet hamster. Shaun's article focuses on defying words not definitions and "that person is not that mental illness." Just by using that horrid word shows us why Shaun felt a need to write that article, why Elyn Saks never told anyone about her mental illness, why Shane and Hannah produced a video called "Things You Should NEVER Say To A Disabled Person," the list is endless. Mrs. Warren even tries to justify herself by saying, "I'm really the rebel in the family" Which shows us she knew it was wrong, so why did she say it in the first place? We have the owl, known as the "wise old owl," and the chimpanzee, that mainly uses fear and desire instead of knowledge and decision making. Just by naming this boat "The Mind," I can infer this poem's purpose is to show what could possibly happen if the "chimpanzee" takes control of our mind. The last two lines of this poem "The Owl and the Chimpanzee," Shows us if we simply ignore the fear and emotions and let the "owl" take control "a more peaceful night it would be" Tue, 27 Oct 2020 21:37:18 -0400
