This statement provided by Nanny allows for the audience to develop a deeper understanding as to why she is being, what seemed to be, so unreasonable to Janie when she kissed a boy. We as an audience are able to develop sympathy for Nanny’s perseverance through her difficult and unfair life as a sexually abused slave. This newfound appreciation for Nanny as a character allows for the reader to consider whether Nanny’s true intentions for Janie are actually valid and not so ridiculous as they seemed at first. Not only does it allude to why Lucien needs the tie in the first place, as Karis explains, but also his own feelings towards the tie which, I believe, made for this scene to be lighthearted. The way Lucien explains he does not want a clip on tie because those are only for children, which is him expressing that he wants to be thought of as an adult. Even though Lucien still shows his childish behavior when getting excited about wearing the 'spider man' tie. I believe this allowed for this scene to connect to the audiences pathos to show how lighthearted Lucien is and how caring Jack is towards him. Many social standards are put upon both men and women within society, one being that men should not speak of their feelings, which is why men are often less likely to be diagnosed with any of the mental illness that are spoken about within this poem. Which is why I believe the author writes about them, to show that he, himself, suffers from these illnesses and instead of conforming to societal norms, he spoke up and received the help he desperately needed.
