Standardized tests are nothing but trick questions designed to keep students second guessing everything they do, expecting for them to do something in 60 minutes that most adults couldn't do in a day. Smart. Wed, 17 Mar 2021 22:00:02 +0300 Sometimes "alive" is a little bit more than living. https://nowcomment.com/documents/263250?scroll_to=2381795 https://nowcomment.com/documents/263250?scroll_to=2381795 "My god, my black students are alive" This shows that the students are not normally "alive." The speaker's dialogue can be interpreted different ways, in my opinion. It could be in fear, in disbelief, or in joy. Wed, 17 Mar 2021 22:00:02 +0300 I would not want my head to explode into sharp rocks... https://nowcomment.com/documents/263250?scroll_to=2381776 https://nowcomment.com/documents/263250?scroll_to=2381776 The imagery that I get from this is very confusing. Trying to analyze it is even harder. Using your brain is a good thing. Reefs are beautiful, rare, sustaining, and delicate places. Wed, 17 Mar 2021 22:00:02 +0300 Certain words stick out at me https://nowcomment.com/documents/263250?scroll_to=2381760 https://nowcomment.com/documents/263250?scroll_to=2381760 The word telescope seems odd here. Most of the poem has things to do with water and the ocean, but the inclusion of telescope confuses me. Another thing is how it is used: "the teacher will hand him a telescope so he can see the world" Telescopes are used mainly for seeing things that are not on Earth. He might be implying that he is not a part of the world, or I might be overthinking things. Wed, 17 Mar 2021 22:00:02 +0300 I think this quote functions as a hook https://nowcomment.com/documents/263250?scroll_to=2381757 https://nowcomment.com/documents/263250?scroll_to=2381757 This quote is clearly out of its context. Quartez uses it to create his context. It sets the theme for later on. Most beginning quotes (I don't have any idea how to word that) do this. It is a hook. Wed, 17 Mar 2021 22:00:02 +0300 They have wings, yet they do not fly. https://nowcomment.com/documents/263250?scroll_to=2381755 https://nowcomment.com/documents/263250?scroll_to=2381755 This kid has monarch butterfly wings. The type of wings may be important here, but I think of metamorphosis when a butterfly is used in symbolism. Maybe the author is referring school as a cocoon to protect the students while they become adults? Wed, 17 Mar 2021 22:00:02 +0300 Regular https://nowcomment.com/documents/262700?scroll_to=2374267 https://nowcomment.com/documents/262700?scroll_to=2374267 Malcolm London uses the word "regular" to describe his janitors. He brings this up again in the part where he mentioned segregation, which at the time made me think he was about to talk about race discrimination when actually he was saying that schools separate people based on their intelligence. He gives the audience two groups: "Regulars" and "Honors," or followers and leaders. There are lots of ways to elaborate on this, such as the janitors literally following him or saying that the janitors are not smart. But my guess is that, according to this, anyone who is not their own boss is following something. Another thing that frequently pops up in the subject of education is the fact that teachers prepare the children for leading the future. It seems like a harder job than they are given credit for. Thu, 11 Mar 2021 00:56:59 +0300 Consonant Sounds https://nowcomment.com/documents/258111?scroll_to=2334757 https://nowcomment.com/documents/258111?scroll_to=2334757 I have noticed that throughout this poem that the "s" sound appears in every stanza, almost every line, and sometimes, multiple times in one line. I don't know if this was Jordan's choice or a coincidence that happened to work out. It might even be both. Another thing I noticed was that she uses words that seem confrontational such as "refuse," "fist," and "accuse." Fri, 12 Feb 2021 20:06:28 +0300 Problem Solving: The Morrie you listen, the Morrie you can help. https://nowcomment.com/documents/246973?scroll_to=2301694 https://nowcomment.com/documents/246973?scroll_to=2301694 This shows that conflict does not have to end in violence or in an undesirable way. Morrie understood both sides of the problem. Because of this, he was trusted by both of them. He actually listened to the protesters, rather than trying to shut them down, which turned out to be the right thing to do. Fri, 29 Jan 2021 20:37:50 +0300 Acceptance https://nowcomment.com/documents/246973?scroll_to=2301607 https://nowcomment.com/documents/246973?scroll_to=2301607 Morrie believes that accepting things is better than fighting them. Morrie is not capable of "fighting" anything and yet he seems more at peace than Mitch. Fearing something and trying to prevent it will only lead to more conflict. Rather than trying to distance himself from his emotions, Morrie wants Mitch to accept them. Fri, 29 Jan 2021 19:59:57 +0300 There are so many details in this image that show that this man has little respect for the government. https://nowcomment.com/documents/248259?scroll_to=2266461 https://nowcomment.com/documents/248259?scroll_to=2266461 I don't know much about politics. Math and history are simple, but if you ask me a question about politics I am completely clueless! What I DO know is that this desk belongs to the House Speaker, and she WORKS there. It's pretty rude to make a joke out of someone's work. The flag on the dresser is another sign of disrespect, but I don't know if he put it there deliberately or on accident. He has his phone out and his foot on someone else's desk. (he's even pointing to it, he knows it's there) It all seems deliberate to me. What I want to know is what he wanted to accomplish by this. What I get from this image is that he doesn't care about the country. And if he doesn't care, then why was he even there? Fri, 08 Jan 2021 20:54:36 +0300 Have Hope! https://nowcomment.com/documents/246060?scroll_to=2261319 https://nowcomment.com/documents/246060?scroll_to=2261319 This looks so strange when it is compared to the New Year Celebration for 2021. People were actually happy! It feels completely different now. Although I was practically socially distancing myself even before the pandemic, It is sad to wonder if things will be back to normal... Of course things will get better eventually; I still have hope that we can fix all the problems 2020 has given us. Solve them one at a time, and, with patience and persistence, we can make the world better than it was even before 2020's problems! I know this because even though people have lost so much, they are STILL working toward making things right. After all, gravity can only pull you so far down. Wed, 06 Jan 2021 21:19:56 +0300 I can take you over here sir! https://nowcomment.com/documents/240008?scroll_to=2212083 https://nowcomment.com/documents/240008?scroll_to=2212083 The cashier lady talks a lot and does not seem to notice that Arnold didn't want to buy the groceries. She didn't bother to ask him why he wanted to speak with the manager or why he had so many boxes of cereal. She clearly saw that he was looking for the manager and not the cashier. I do not really think she took advantage of his disability, but she definitely did not do a good job. She probably knew he was disabled, but didn't do anything about it. If she was the same cashier as the one in the beginning, she would have recognized him and realized that he was not buying the stuff. Arnold did not do anything about it, though. He had the chance to tell the cashier that he was returning the stuff instead of buying it and it is clear that he thought this, but he decided to buy the groceries again. It would have been awkward, but I'd rather have an awkward conversation than be scammed. Mon, 23 Nov 2020 22:38:21 +0300 Entry Point 9: Short Lines and Long Lines. https://nowcomment.com/documents/238756?scroll_to=2176101 https://nowcomment.com/documents/238756?scroll_to=2176101 When I read a poem and a line only has one word, that word instantly seems more important. In this particular poem each line is one thought. The shorter lines stand out more, but it only works with lines that have the ability to evoke certain feelings just by being said.
