Response to "jabbing"

This word is not necessarily found in this kind of context often. However it fits this sentence perfectly. From the time the narrator had gotten in the taxi he had been nervous. He had practiced what he was going to say and now he was worried about having to go last. The use of the word jabbing in this context was kind of a positive connotation. usually this word being used in a negative connotation. He was jabbing his suspicions away trying to create a scenario in his head that had more of a positive ending rather than the negative thoughts that had filled his head up until this moment. This word stuck out to me so I thought I would touch on the way the author used it in this context.

I relate a lot of things between the months of November-March to basketball. It takes up a majority of my time and is usually on my mind. Getting closer to sectionals and tournament time really relates to Striving for Accuracy. The quote presented here that reads, "A man who has committed a mistake and doesn't correct it is committing another mistake." This is very relatable. On the basketball court, when you make a mistake you must fix it immediately and make sure it doesn't happen again. If you continue to make the same mistake it could cost you the game. Just a few days ago we had a team meeting where we talked about striving for accuracy but it wasn't necessarily put in those words. We talked about fixing little mistakes that are made consistently, we talked about playing for something bigger than ourselves, but in all honesty the overview of the conversation was us putting our heads together to strive for accuracy. We currently have six seniors on our team who are playing for something. The tournament stats next week and if we lose a game we are done with basketball, some of us forever. We must strive for accuracy and reduce mistakes to make it as far as we are capable of making it in the tournament. We must take pride in the game and cut down on the mistakes that are made.

The meaning I took from this portion of the Wendell Berry quote was if you are not confused, your mind is not working hard enough. If you think things are simple you are missing the complexity of life and its content. I made a text-to-text connection to this portion of the quote. We recently did and assignment over Wheatley Essays. One article titled "Willing to be Disturbed" and the other titled "The Works: Your Source to Being Fully Alive, Summer 2000". These articles explain how opening up your mind to other peoples opinions can make your opinion richer or possibly change your viewpoint. This potion of the quote summarizes those articles perfectly. Everything is worth exploring whether it be someone else opinion of the complexity you find within life. Don't be satisfied with the opinions and thoughts you have now, go out and find a source to challenge those thoughts and make your brain wonder.

Jennifer Elise Foerster

When looking through the map a few people caught my eye that could be directly connected back to Joy Harjo. However, Jennifer Elise Foerster stuck out to me the most. At first glance of her on the map I saw that she was a part of the Muscogee Creek tribe which is also the one that Joy mentions she is a part of in the pbs article. Jennifer wrote a poem called "NotesFrom Coosa" this poem getting its name from a story about tie-snakes that used to be told when she was growing up. I made many connections between Joy and Jennifer but the main was how their poetry reflected the passion they had for their "people". Native americas have a different kind of culture and these two women have done a great job using poetry to expression important it is that the Native American culture stays alive. https://www.loc.gov/resource/afc2020004.afc2020004_21_ph01/

Repeated words

Joy Harjo frequently repeats the word "we" throughout this poem. Within the poem she is sharing some information about where she came from. In the PBS article she made a comment about why she made the effort to put the digital map together. She wanted to share with the world some other poets and people who came from some of the same places she grew up. She uses th word "we" in this poem to put emphasis on the fact that the native Americans are in this together. they support each other, and their culture is strong. I've always loved poems that told a story, and this poem does a great job explaining the culture and morals of the Native American tribes.

In relating these two articles this was interesting to me. A comment similar to the first sentence of this paragraph was made towards the beginning of the previous article. The difference being, this article was written in 2020 when the author was relating this to the global pandemic. While the other article was written in 2002, although it is relatable to this day and age the pandemic was not necessarily the topic of discussion back 18 years ago.

This is one of the first things that I noticed. The author stated, "We live in a complex world, we often don’t know what’s going on, and we won’t be able to understand its complexity unless we spend more time in not knowing". This was published in 2002 and it is so relatable in todays world. We wake up in the morning and have no clue what we are going to be challenged with during that day.

When Jack asks Barry why he didn't perform for his dad like he did for Jack, Barry responds "it didn't matter to you what kind of shot it was, you just wanted to see a shot". This shows us that Barry knows the difference between how Jack and how his father see him. Jack is proud of his for doing what he is able to do. His father wants absolutely everything he does to be done perfectly.

Jack stood and carried on a conversation with his where Barry never spoke a word. Towards the end of the conversation Jack said the party would not be the same without Barry there. Barry raises his hands over his eyes. Jack asks him why he closed his eyes and Barry says, "because I can see whats coming".

In my opinion, with Reena's comments made in this section, she is trying to make jack release that rather than helping the boys he is shielding them from the real world. She stated, "Your job is to help these guys function in the real world. If I told every kid I placed in a foster home that they could stay there as long as they wanted I wouldn't be doing them a favor. Its not real. In the real world people get hurt, people get disappointed."

Not minutes after, he screams "Would you all give it a rest, I feel like I'm inside a blender". The woman states, "Burt's a traditional kind of man, and I just don't know how he is going to feel about living next door to retarded people". Jack kind go makes a comment like did you just say that, and she goes on to call herself a rebel. After studying and reading about disabilities and people who live with disabilities, it puts a new meaning on this word. The word should not be used to describe a person. it is hurtful to the person and they may take offense to that. however, what could be put in place of this word to make it "correct" to say about a person?

I immediately made a connection from this poem to my Ivy Tech psychology class. It just so happens that today I did a full lesson on resilience. The psychological definition of resilience is the ability to mentally or emotionally cope with a crisis or to return to pre-crisis status quickly. This definition fits this poem perfectly which also explains the title and poem synthesis. Throughout this poem it is explaining someone who has gone through a hard time but is still going through daily life like normal. They are strong and have pushed through the hard times they encountered.
