When I go to the grocery, the rule is to only get what's on the list or something I remember we need back at home. However, I have noticed I want to buy random things not on the list, but have resisted because I know I should not. Another example of managing impulsivity was last night when I was leaving the gym, I had the urge to get Chic-fil-a. Instead, I utilized the fourth habit of mind, thinking flexibly, and considered my alternative options for dinner back at home. In the end, I resisted getting fast food and made pasta for dinner. I have always seemed to struggle with understanding why people are upset in their particular situation and I guess that's just because I was not in their shoes and did not know what they were feeling. I have also struggled with empathizing with others for the same reason. Without being in their situation, I just can't understand the issue. It's not every time, but it definitely happens often. She is in a minority group living in a world that ignores the issues that occur on the reservations in which these people were forced to move to. A couple lines before she said they "needed to be saved from them (Christians)." The white man was the one who introduced alcohol to Native Americans in the first place and now there are serious alcohol related issues on most reservations. It's just another example of them getting the short end of the stick. People grow from failure. Many of the most successful people have failed hundreds of times before reaching that success. That failure sucks in the moment, but is ultimately worth it to grow as a person and be where you want to be in life. It seems like adults judge a student's intelligence based on test scores and report cards. That is all from an academic setting. Maybe that kid cannot focus in class or does not care to listen, but they could be amazing at other things outside of school. Grades should not be a way of measuring intelligence!!
