Now I don't disagree with this statement. I am a strong believer in admitting faults. However, the speaker uses this quote in reference to intellectual faults. The lines between striving for accuracy can easily be replaced with perfection, and often is in places of education. Accuracy is important, but if we were all accurate all the time, nothing would be learned and nothing would be fixed. Humanity strives off of building onto each other and fostering a place of experimentation. Mon, 30 Aug 2021 12:02:09 -0400 Is this healthy? https://nowcomment.com/documents/247448?scroll_to=2530224 https://nowcomment.com/documents/247448?scroll_to=2530224 I would like to preface my next statement with the fact that I support and commend hard workers who try their best on every single task they are assigned. This is something that is very difficult. However, in the context of this sentence, and the paragraph as a whole, I do not believe this to be a healthy standard. The ability to be persistant is an admirable trait, but is also an all too easy way to suffer burnout in strong waves of crippling self doubt and perfectionist lines of thinking. Always be mindful of your emotional and mental state before starting on any task. Breaks can make those assignments blossom a hundred times easier than just bum rushing through it. Mon, 30 Aug 2021 11:54:11 -0400 What is success? https://nowcomment.com/documents/247448?scroll_to=2530201 https://nowcomment.com/documents/247448?scroll_to=2530201 The speaker submits to us that people with certain qualities are often attributed with being successful. But I'd like to point out the differences with what is a widely held standard of success, and what is small, but equally as impactful, personal success. There is no quantifying success. To do so only succeeds in alienating individuals and creating biased imagery of success. Malcom proves that a formal education doesn't necessarily mean that you are an intellectual. All you need to become an intellectual is a desire for knowledge and the patience to understand and be well versed in the topic. I like how when we break down this outdated ideal of "Children seen, not heard," we can really begin to see incite a relationship of cooperation. I remember being younger and asking if my sister would talk "normal" after she turned 5 or something. (she was still talking in that childish lisp, I suppose) and My mother had to explain to me that aging didn't work like that Thu, 25 Feb 2021 14:12:31 -0500 An unfortunate reality https://nowcomment.com/documents/260279?scroll_to=2354470 https://nowcomment.com/documents/260279?scroll_to=2354470 Way more children are often fending for themselves on the streets due to poverty levels. Tue, 20 Apr 2021 22:01:28 -0400 Compassion, and why a lack thereof creates pointless, discriminatory systems. https://nowcomment.com/documents/260279?scroll_to=2354454 https://nowcomment.com/documents/260279?scroll_to=2354454 I wanted to use this section/ portion of the story to talk about why people want to reform/defund/or abolish the industrial prison complex. We see here this woman, Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones, show compassion to this young boy of whom most would write off as a young criminal. She feeds him. She is not obligated to do this. But she does anyway. When you show compassion, to others and you start teaching them compassion, self-care, and critical thinking at an early age, you create a person who may not feel obligated to do what they do, like Roger who we later learn, wants shoes. Thu, 28 Jan 2021 14:15:08 -0500 A weird gray area https://nowcomment.com/documents/247092?scroll_to=2299523 https://nowcomment.com/documents/247092?scroll_to=2299523 I find this part makes me interested in why we as a species avoids the fact of death and aging. Could it be that maybe on the opposite side of the spectrum is an unhealthy obsession or fascination? Thu, 28 Jan 2021 13:58:28 -0500 To expound upon this wonderful point . . . https://nowcomment.com/documents/247092?scroll_to=2299486 https://nowcomment.com/documents/247092?scroll_to=2299486 I think it's interesting that a societal push for independence has created feelings of helplessness and extreme dependencies on others who aren't prepared or trained to handle those emotions. While we may see independence as the goal, we are pushing ourselves into a hole of extreme feelings of inadequacy and unhealthy dependency traumas Thu, 28 Jan 2021 13:48:28 -0500 The way that certain structures in society kill human fulfillment. https://nowcomment.com/documents/246954?scroll_to=2269362 https://nowcomment.com/documents/246954?scroll_to=2269362 As young adults, we are more often than not approached with the question of what we want to do when we "grow up." Many of us might respond with our preferred majors or interests. However, some, when asked the above question, respond with a fantasy or dream in their head and are ridiculed for having that. They are told that it isn't realistic, it isn't "useful, or it is profitable. All of which I believe are irrelevant points. I feel that the way our society and social hierarchy is propped up supports the notion that something is only "good" if it is exploitable for monetary or social gain. Those who choose a Business major are inherently better than those who may choose Gender Studies. I believe that we need to look at things in a way that creates a beneficial self-fulfillment. Mon, 11 Jan 2021 14:00:47 -0500 Wow. https://nowcomment.com/documents/240008?scroll_to=2191953 https://nowcomment.com/documents/240008?scroll_to=2191953 Ok... So that was honestly a very good scene. The nuance of the goodbyes and subtleties of the callbacks were at a level I was not expecting from a 90's movie. Not to mention, I liked the way the ending was shot. It could have been a long singular take from the booth to the train, and it was shot as if it should've been. Something about the cuts feel jarring and the stability of Jack's emotions could be called into question, just by the way he moves stiffly and never walks next to the "boys" This is expounded upon with the shot-reverse-shots, where we see the boys' faces but only the side-profile of Jack. And then finally confirmed when he breaks his demeanor and lets his emotions melt in Rina's arms. Tue, 10 Nov 2020 10:09:23 -0500 Interesting and engaging. Could be considered ahead of its time to be honest. https://nowcomment.com/documents/240008?scroll_to=2191845 https://nowcomment.com/documents/240008?scroll_to=2191845 I'm not always big on 90's movies, with the seemingly subpar cinematography or the theme usually rammed down your throat, I've never really had a fantastic experience with a 90's film (maybe barring Heathers) However, this movie might be an exception. Don't get me wrong, it still feels like a PSA, but in the good ways, rather than the bad. The movie sheds light on early-advancement understandings of Neurodivergence in a Neurotypical society. Growing up with the "Back in my day" parents, I always assumed that in this time, they didn't care about anyone who was om the spectrum. However, we can obviously tell that they did. Tue, 10 Nov 2020 09:46:44 -0500 Such a small poem https://nowcomment.com/documents/238472?scroll_to=2175156 https://nowcomment.com/documents/238472?scroll_to=2175156 One stanza and seven lines. There aren't any real metaphors, no similes, onomatopoeias, and the only real figure of speech used is alliteration (see lines 3 and 4) and even that feels coincidental. Yet the message is vast. It really opens your eyes to some concepts you may not have thought about before. Fri, 30 Oct 2020 10:41:07 -0400 A good outlook on a majorly independent culture we've created https://nowcomment.com/documents/238472?scroll_to=2175145 https://nowcomment.com/documents/238472?scroll_to=2175145 In a society where people who need help are seen as weak, It's easy to feel hopeless, especially in a time like this. The poem doesn't hide the message that it's ok to ask for help. It does, however, have an underlying theme. Why do we have to be reminded that it's ok to need help? Why is that not a normalized concept? Fri, 30 Oct 2020 10:36:25 -0400 I'd really like some resources to back this statement up https://nowcomment.com/documents/233908?scroll_to=2175124 https://nowcomment.com/documents/233908?scroll_to=2175124 I completely agree, I just want to study this branch of psychology among adolescents, and the more reading material, the better Fri, 30 Oct 2020 10:24:24 -0400 I'd like to add on to this . . . https://nowcomment.com/documents/233908?scroll_to=2175119 https://nowcomment.com/documents/233908?scroll_to=2175119 Ok so. I really like this and I felt that I would like to add on by relaying what I've observed in my own experience as a teenager. (You could say I've got a little bit of those year under my belt.) Teenagers are often told by their parents, "if you want to be treated as an adult, then you have to give me the same level of respect." It's great in theory, and it's wonderful when practiced . . . correctly, that is. That sentence is too often translated as, "If you don't treat me with respect as an authority, I won't treat you with respect as a person." There's a fine line that parents and teens walk and cross respectively. Fri, 30 Oct 2020 10:22:46 -0400
