I thought that too when I read it. I think analogies are a great way to describe and explain. The author's choice of using was really useful.

I think the choice of words here is very significant. It is different compared to how I speak, so it states out to me. It also makes the conversation stick with me more because the words are not ones that I use.

The author's choice of words made this paragraph very easy to picture. The words choices were very specific and lead me, as the reader, to be able to picture the scene and setting.

This line makes me wonder why the author choose to use whales instead of sharks. When describing the ocean, many say it is a sea of sharks instead of whales. Did the author use whales instead of sharks to reference something or to make the line stand out?

I think this is a good point. Usually people say that the world is full of sharks, but in this case the author said that the world is full of whales. I think this makes the line stand out more and like Mia said, it helps give the line more meaning and could be referencing many things.

Yes! As a kid, we all used our imaginations to create a world that was fun and let us use our creativity. As seen in this line, the son is doing the same thing. He is using his creativity to picture that the puddle is a vast sea.

I find this interesting too. Honestly, I did not recognize this until you pointed it out. The author might have used whales rather than sharks to make the line stand out. Since many people know the ocean is filled with sharks, using the word whales makes you think about the line more.

I agree with Riley. The ocean is vast and covers a lot of the world. It also has many things living within it. These things could be said about the world. Naming the poem "Ocean" is a way to link the world and the poem.

Austin, I think you did a great job of explaining what this quote meant. To be honest, when I first read it I was not completely aware about what it meant. Your explanation of the quote helped me see that it means that we do not know our oppression until it happens.

Ethan makes a really good point. Growing up, we have been told that we could take honors classes if we passed certain tests or got certain grades. They started this in elementary school and have carried it all the way through high school. Sometimes there has been a clear divide between the two groups based off of the classes they choose to take. If you choose an AP class or a dual credit class, people think you are smarter and people understand why you might be struggling. They are even praised for taking harder classes. When someone is taking a regular class and they struggle, sometimes people do not understand why they are struggling because the class was deemed as easy. I think there should not be this divide between the two groups because both groups should be given praise and credit for the classes they take and the effort they put in.

Many students can be taught the materials, but they are not learning. They copy the notes, turn in the homework, and complete tests but they are unable to tell you what they learned. They cram it into their brains, just so they can pass the test and get the grade. They might get a good grade on the test, but later when you ask them what they remember they can hardly say anything. This shows that students can receive and be taught the lessons, but can never really learn the materials.

He says, "Anyone who has read a great deal can imagine the new world that opened." I think many take this new world for granted because many have grown up knowing words and reading.
I think even when someone is gone they are still with you. They might not be there physically, but they are always in your heart and mind. Little things can remind you of them. It could be something like a smell or maybe their voice. They might be gone physically, but they are still there with you.

Many believe that having money or things can make them happy. The feelings they get are short term and not lasting. They are usually longing for something else. As the stanza said, "money nor power are not the thing that will give you the feeling you're looking for..." I agree with this because people use money or power to fill the void they are feeling.

I really agree with this. I just turned 17 last week, but sometimes I can still act like I'm five. It really depends on the situation. For example, I plan on going to sled with friends after school. I used do this a ton when I was younger. I also can act older than I am. I try to be more mature in certain settings. For me, I can act all ages depending on the situation.

Trust goes both ways

Trust is something hard to earn but easy to lose. If you are not able to trust someone, then it is likely that they are unable to trust you. In this exercise, they had to trust that the person will catch them. I've done this before and it is hard to trust that your partner with catch you, meaning you will not be dropped. When you fall back and they catch you, this shows your partner that they have earned your trust because you trusted them and fell back into their arms.

Character Development

I noticed what Brandon did. Each character had a goal that they were trying to achieve. At the start of the movie, the characters seemed to be timid and scared to do what their tasks were. For Arnold, he was having trouble with speaking up at grocery store. When he went there the second time he wasn't able to tell them that he didn't want the groceries. The last time he was able to speak up and he got very excited when he had to put them back. To me, this shows a great amount of character development and personal growth. As the movie went on, each character was able to achieve the things they were scared about doing.

Answering Katie's Question

Katie asks a good question. I believe they have mixed emotions about saying goodbye. They were clearly upset that Jack was getting a new job, but they also seemed happy to go on their train trip. They all of a close bond that they will miss because they won't be seeing Jack everyday, but it's clear that was closure for all of them as they left on the train.

Animal Puppets

Arnold comes down the stairs carrying a box. When he sets the box down, Shelia and Norman both guess what's in this box. When their guess are wrong, Arnold opens up the box and pulls out animal puppets. He explains to Norman that he bought animal puppets because when they have a puppet on one hand and another on the other hand, then they become three guest instead of one. To me, it feel as if Arnold was wanting it to be a bigger party, but didn't know who to invite or how to invite others. He bought the puppets as a way of having more people at their party for Jack.

Anger vs hate

This brings up a very good point. Arnold says, "but we hate you," and you know he does not actually hate Jack. He is angry with the choice Jack chose. However, many do not know how to express their emotions or "label them the correct way." Arnold clearly does not hate Jack, but it is evident that he is angry with him for leaving. I feel that Arnold wasn't sure how to express how he felt and the easiest way he would think of was saying he hated Jack, when he was just angry with the choice Jack chose.

Adding to this new perspective

When Jack took Berry back to the Pro Shot Golf Range, Berry was able to show that he was capable of hitting the golf ball and be an instructor. However, when his father was around, he seemed to struggle. He was trying to show his father that he was capable of doing tasks, like fill cups or hitting golf balls, but he wasn't able to complete these.
I feel that Jack was a safe space for Berry and he always made Berry feel comfortable, whereas Berry's dad was putting pressure on Berry to succeed. To me, this made me realize that Berry felt very judged and like he wasn't enough when he was around his father. That made him mess up tasks that he's able to complete around Jack and the other boys.

The choice of the word "When"

For me, many words stood out in this poem. The word, "when," was one of them. This word stood out to me because it is very optimistic. Since Kaur wrote, "When your circumstances are great," this shows that things won't always be bad. The word, "when" is showing that your circumstances will be great, but it's just a matter of when will they be great?
