In this context, this question doesn't seem like the type that derived from doubt, more from the need of reassurance. News like this is very shocking, especially if it isn't planned (which it didn't seem like it was) so I can see why he'd ask the "ridiculous question", "are you sure?" When talking through a phone there's usually no face for the voice, leading you to look at different things.
