White people are turning black people against each other, for lack of better words. Black men back then made it obvious that they were attracted to white women and did not like black women to be more like white men. Black parents abandoned African names and named their children traditional European names to be more like white people because that is what they considered "good" Mon, 01 Feb 2021 21:31:00 -0500 Thinking before acting https://nowcomment.com/documents/247448?scroll_to=2299054 https://nowcomment.com/documents/247448?scroll_to=2299054 I feel like, as teenagers, this may be what we struggle with the most. Most of us don't think twice about what we say or how it could hurt someones feeling. I myself have been working on that along with a load of other things for months and am very proud of how far I have come and the work I've done Thu, 28 Jan 2021 13:58:57 -0500 Jess Oltman (Room 407: Indiana) https://nowcomment.com/documents/247448?scroll_to=2299048 https://nowcomment.com/documents/247448?scroll_to=2299048 Typically I work almost every day of the week and on the days that I don't I have classes a Ivy Tech. Working so much and picking up so many shifts has always been an impulse for me because if I'm not working I feel like I'm wasting my time. Today, however, I did the unthinkable. I asked someone to cover my shift. I did this to give myself more time today to work on school and to work on scholarship applications. Today I included managing impulsivity into my life by taking a step back from my hectic schedule and making time for me. It relates back to this poem where Christians are seen as the "enemy" more or less Tue, 26 Jan 2021 21:11:22 -0500 This Quote https://nowcomment.com/documents/252045?scroll_to=2294644 https://nowcomment.com/documents/252045?scroll_to=2294644 We are still America. We know the rumors of our demise. We spit them out. They die soon" I adore this quote because I feel as if it speaks for Native Americans as much then as it does now, sadly. Natives were killed by the thousands and yet we still falsely believe that the first Thanksgiving was a peaceful dinner between the pilgrims and natives that lead to a life long friendship Tue, 26 Jan 2021 21:07:05 -0500 Speaking your mind https://nowcomment.com/documents/251070?scroll_to=2285608 https://nowcomment.com/documents/251070?scroll_to=2285608 SO many people are scared to speak their mind for fear of losing friends. It look me nearly 18 years to realize that sometimes people don't deserve your friendship. Sometimes its just better to let some people go, even if it hurts. Aren't we here so make each other's lives better. Everyone is so wrapped up in things that in the big picture of things don't matter and are two busy to worry about others. Sat, 23 Jan 2021 03:12:03 -0500 Change https://nowcomment.com/documents/251070?scroll_to=2285530 https://nowcomment.com/documents/251070?scroll_to=2285530 People are terrible with change, this is a fact. We are afraid of it. We are so scared to leave behind a routine that we know so well. Change brings unknown which we dread. Fear of the unknown has lead to a lot... a LOT of issues, even issues as big as racism or homophobia all sprout from this overwhelming fear of the unknown. "No matter how thin you make a pancake there is always going to be two sides." Its crazy how even the same exact event can provoke such different emotions in different people. A speech may be easy as pie for one student and an awful, anxiety inducing one for someone else. He is mature and understands that the bad things that have happened to his people no fault of his, but of others Fri, 03 Sep 2021 09:47:21 -0400 Light https://nowcomment.com/documents/250105?scroll_to=2280767 https://nowcomment.com/documents/250105?scroll_to=2280767 Light is obviously very important to the narrator. He sees it as a way to remind himself that he is alive and real in a world that treats him as if he is not Wed, 20 Jan 2021 11:27:26 -0500 Invisibility https://nowcomment.com/documents/250105?scroll_to=2280764 https://nowcomment.com/documents/250105?scroll_to=2280764 The invisibility of the narrator is not something that is "supernatural." It is because he is black in a time where people who were back were mistreated or seen as less valuable than people with lighter skin, he was overlooked, therefore, invisible Wed, 20 Jan 2021 11:25:44 -0500 Keeper? https://nowcomment.com/documents/240008?scroll_to=2186657 https://nowcomment.com/documents/240008?scroll_to=2186657 Would you call a mother a "keeper" of her children? Would you call a teacher a "keeper" of her students? No, this interaction would not happen, so why does Bob refer to Barry as a "keeper" to the men with disabilities, not once, but several times over. The answer is clear, Bob sees his son and his roommates as animals. This is not just a job to him, its a friendship. He will never stop being the caretaker of the boys, he will always be their friend. Barry has been preparing for it for a long time and how that it has come, Barry seems terrified. Not in the "I really respect this man and I a want him to think well of me way" but in the "I'm scared of him" way Tue, 10 Nov 2020 08:04:30 -0500 A look into "Resilience" https://nowcomment.com/documents/238340?scroll_to=2169534 https://nowcomment.com/documents/238340?scroll_to=2169534 All of the stanzas have the same set up. They are directed at "you" the audience and is very general in the issue "you are struggling with at hand so just about anyone could be able to relate to the poem. It them describes what "you" are still doing ,such as standing or thriving, and then the poet describes what has metaphorically happened to "you," like being "knocked down" mentally due to a struggle one is suffering through.
