Janie views her life as something beautiful that she loves, and still does not let herself forget the hardships and struggles she has endured. She views each part of her life as a "new leaf", whether it be good or bad.

Mr. Harris points this poster out to his son, explaining that the poster or quote itself will not help them out of the hood, but the inspiration he draws from it very well can.

This line shows a teacher allowing her own fear to label her students as either victims of gun violence or perpetrators the same before they have had a chance to grow up. Maybe this fear is rational, but it may also be irrational.

Standardized tests do not determine how good or bad of a student one is, they only prove or disprove the notion that students are learning what their particular state deems to be necessary.

In Malcolm X's autobiography "Learning to Read", X highlights the freedom he finds within reading the dictionary in his cell. Malcolm X dedicated his time in prison to learning, and bettering himself. His decision to become literate was made when he discovered he was not eloquently spoken enough to speak to other people who had not grown up on the streets. X found the learning and copying of a dictionary was the enrichment he needed to succeed when he was freed from prison. This way of learning allowed Malcolm X to feel as though he had control over a large part of his life, at a time where he was not allowed to control the other aspects.

This statement was made to let Roger know she understands why he felt the need to try to steal from her, although that does not make it right.

I think Arnold's grocery situation says that he is easily taken advantage of, as he bought dozens of boxes of wheaties from the store. The people working there probably know who he is because he is there so often. Jack's response helps Arnold understand that he was taken advantage of though he believes he was given a deal, and he helps Arnold understand he needs to take some of his purchases back to the grocery store.
