During Malcolm London's TED Talk, he brings up how our education system has fallen, and is failing us. London talks about how school is segregated, to put us into certain groups, so we fall into where they believe we should be. If you are in certain classes, you are looked at in a specific way; if you play sports, you are looked at a specific way. We are put into categories to be separated, which then can affect who we hang out around that ends up with us in to their groups. If you play sports and are in honors classes, you receive a label for yourself that can make you "popular". If you are involved in no sports, and are in standard classes, you are labeled "regular". When we receive these labels in school, it can lead to being indecisive after graduation; we feel that our story has been planned for us, so we follow were they lead us. They train, and lead, us to our part they see us in on this Earth. We are their soldiers.

In “Learning to Read” by Malcolm X, the thematic category being shown is STATE OF MIND. Throughout the essay, Malcolm gives details about how his prison education is what actually helped develop his literacy. Having the ability to find a dictionary in prison, to take the time to write every word he saw, improving his penmanship, and to grow his vocabulary as well is dedication. I know a few people who are in my family, or are close friends, who have been to prison, and they saw it is hard to find the motivation to complete even a simple task because you feel as if you have nothing. By completing everything he had during his sentence, X shows strength, determination, and a strong mental state.

Harryette Mullen describes her garden, and about how it has changed since the last time she was there. When saying "everything has changed since my last visit", Mullen shows how when revisiting a place, you see it a different way then before. Although she does see changes in her garden, her memory helps her remember the garden, but also compare how it is now.

I agree with Flora when saying that June Jordan, "refused to lose the flame/spark she carries". June Jordan is a strong woman who is showing women, of all ages, that we DO have a choice. No matter who you came into this world as, you do have a choice on what happens to/around you, and this specific line is proof of that.

When looking at pre-COVID pictures, it is crazy, but we need to find ways to still enjoy our lives with COVID. During the pandemic we have learned to be more cautious with what we do, but it doesn't mean we can't have a good time.
