It goes to show how past experiences and a loss of innocence can change people. As embarrassing as it is to say this, sometimes I do it out loud, in public. I am also what people would call an overthinker. After reading this, however, I think it is just metacognition. I try to think out everything I need to complete, what I say in situations and how they turn out, and how my actions affect me and others. If the ability to empathize and understand others is a sign of high intelligence, this would mean that our actors, authors, and artists are some of our most brilliant minds. Despite this, many look down on these professions, telling people to shy away from them as these professions are "difficult" to be successful or not "real jobs." Paschen speaks of the struggles from the times of her mother and great grandmother just as Harjo speaks of the longing for justice even after forty years. https://tile.loc.gov/storage-services/service/afc/afc2020004/afc2020004_12/afc2020004_12_ms01.pdf Tue, 26 Jan 2021 08:31:43 -0500 We are STILL America https://nowcomment.com/documents/252045?scroll_to=2292174 https://nowcomment.com/documents/252045?scroll_to=2292174 I think this line nods to the idea that throughout history, natives were not seen as Americans, but rather a people that were in the way of our America. The truth is that they were and still are America. This was their ancestors' land before our ancestors took it from them. Now they are still unnoticed and unappreciated by "Americans" today. Tue, 26 Jan 2021 08:27:48 -0500 Religion and the Unknown https://nowcomment.com/documents/251070?scroll_to=2284789 https://nowcomment.com/documents/251070?scroll_to=2284789 There is an interesting correlation between people of religion and the willingness to change or accept differences. People of religion thrive in the unknown. Fri, 22 Jan 2021 09:55:32 -0500 Same experiences do not equal same experiences https://nowcomment.com/documents/251070?scroll_to=2284787 https://nowcomment.com/documents/251070?scroll_to=2284787 Most of us have probably seen the Lion King, but all of us saw it in different places with different people at a different time. We have all seen it a different amount of times and have different opinions about it. Just because we have all seen the Lion King, doesn't mean we know everything about the Lion King. Fri, 22 Jan 2021 09:55:32 -0500 We are who we are https://nowcomment.com/documents/251070?scroll_to=2284783 https://nowcomment.com/documents/251070?scroll_to=2284783 The author tells us that they understand our ideas and opinions define us. They also tell us that we do not have to forget what we believe, but we must be open to the idea that our ideas could change after listening to others. Fri, 22 Jan 2021 09:55:32 -0500 Everything has changed https://nowcomment.com/documents/251070?scroll_to=2284781 https://nowcomment.com/documents/251070?scroll_to=2284781 If everything has changed, why are we still being rewarded for certainty? If we know people have created great things out of uncertainty, why are we shamed for asking questions? Fri, 22 Jan 2021 21:04:49 -0500 We don't want to change https://nowcomment.com/documents/251070?scroll_to=2284738 https://nowcomment.com/documents/251070?scroll_to=2284738 Change brings challenge. Sometimes, we as humans feel that we have enough challenge as it is. We prioritize, and most of the time change, even in only some aspects of our lives, are usually at the bottom of our list. If it doesn't affect us, we are less likely to change it. Most people ask, "why would I go through the hardship if I cannot directly benefit?" Fri, 22 Jan 2021 19:08:51 -0500 We must spend more time in the not knowing https://nowcomment.com/documents/251070?scroll_to=2284734 https://nowcomment.com/documents/251070?scroll_to=2284734 I think this last sentence has held through the challenges of time. We live in a world FULL of the unknown. Despite this, people have worked together to make solutions. We have adapted, and the longer we spend in the unknown the more we can learn about our world and each other. Fri, 22 Jan 2021 13:12:57 -0500 The world is quite perplexing https://nowcomment.com/documents/251070?scroll_to=2284727 https://nowcomment.com/documents/251070?scroll_to=2284727 I would like to reiterate that this article was written in 2002. What might the author think of the world now? What might they think about the state of our nation? The world has gotten much bigger and much more accessible than it was then. Fri, 22 Jan 2021 21:33:59 -0500 No one person https://nowcomment.com/documents/251070?scroll_to=2284717 https://nowcomment.com/documents/251070?scroll_to=2284717 I would like to point out the author's wording in this particular sentence. She says "No one person..." as in, one singular person cannot give us the answers, but it is possible that many people working together could. Their ideas and experiences together might create a solution that is beneficial to all, not just some, or even one. Fri, 03 Sep 2021 09:47:22 -0400 Trueblood https://nowcomment.com/documents/250105?scroll_to=2282146 https://nowcomment.com/documents/250105?scroll_to=2282146 The contrast of this character and the narrator is something to note. The narrator feels invisible and less than the whites, but Trueblood is fine with telling the man from the school a story most would be ashamed about. Thu, 21 Jan 2021 09:00:28 -0500 President https://nowcomment.com/documents/250105?scroll_to=2280414 https://nowcomment.com/documents/250105?scroll_to=2280414 He refers to the president of the school basically as a white savior telling the narrator that he affected his whole race. He also refers to the president as a king, which is someone who is above his subject, or in this case, the students, and a god who is above everyone. Fri, 03 Sep 2021 09:47:21 -0400 The Word https://nowcomment.com/documents/240008?scroll_to=2186525 https://nowcomment.com/documents/240008?scroll_to=2186525 This is also extremely interest as this is not the first time we hear the word in the movie. In the very beginning of the movie is it said by the new neighbor, an abled person. Notice how the word is discouraged both times, but how someone as an audience member would feel hearing the words from these two characters. Fri, 06 Nov 2020 10:14:51 -0500 The Groceries https://nowcomment.com/documents/240008?scroll_to=2186493 https://nowcomment.com/documents/240008?scroll_to=2186493 I had the similar first reaction as you where I felt upset for Arnold as money is a big worry for people. I then thought deeper and realized that it is not about money. They don't have to pay for rent or bills, but rather overcoming his fear, worry, or whatever you may call it because Arnold doesn't have much financial need, other than groceries it seems. This allowed me to smile and celebrate with Arnold. Mon, 09 Nov 2020 19:30:34 -0500 The Visits https://nowcomment.com/documents/240008?scroll_to=2186490 https://nowcomment.com/documents/240008?scroll_to=2186490 What is also interesting about this section of the movie is that we see two visits. One of two love interests, and another of father and son. The contrast in the visits maybe points out the difficulty abled people have in understanding those who are disabled. Fri, 06 Nov 2020 09:32:42 -0500 Rhyme Scheme https://nowcomment.com/documents/238201?scroll_to=2160922 https://nowcomment.com/documents/238201?scroll_to=2160922 It seems that this poem has no clear rhyme scheme. Why do you think the author used free-verse for a poem about depression? Wed, 28 Oct 2020 14:58:30 -0400 Assessment of Depression https://nowcomment.com/documents/238201?scroll_to=2160631 https://nowcomment.com/documents/238201?scroll_to=2160631 Maybe Sexton came to this from observation. Many people who suffer from depression tend to stay at home and not do much. Maybe she drew this conclusion from personal experience. A person that wants to do something, but can find no motivation to do it is bound to be upset with themselves and quite possibly bored with the things they are doing to fill their time.
