A show on Netflix, Outer Banks, has a quote that reinforces this idea. "The downside of Pogue life is we are ignored and neglected, the upside is we are ignored and neglected. Which means we do whatever we want whenever we want." When we see people step into the spotlight this freedom of choice seems to go away. Take our president for example, any comment he makes he will be slandered by people who disagree with him. The need to keep everyone happy takes away the freedom to do what we want when we step into the spotlight. Being far outside of my comfort zone in theater has really shed some light on some of these habits that I would not readily apply to my life. I am in a constant state of learning and observing from my peers who may be younger than me in that class but possess more experience. One of these peers is Aidan Garrison. Aidan is a sophomore who I was paired up with to create a radio drama to present to the class, no guidelines other than it was to have 20 unique sounds and 5 unique talking characters. We were virtually starting from scratch, we applied the creating, imagining, innovating, habit to come up with a unique and captivating story in only a few days. However we really had to drive home the working interdependently because one of us was in person and one of us was at home making group work all the more challenging. Remaining open to continuous learning, and gathering data through all sense imply the same thing. Listening and learning from others to grow. The two quotes that follow these habits hint towards the same idea of gaining knowledge by observing , or remaining open to continuous learning. In Harjo’s poem “An American Sunrise” we can pull the phrase “our ancestors fights” this is a link between Harjo and Forester. Harjo calls attention to the fights many Native ancestors went through as a way to fill the gap. In the first PBS article we were to read we learn that her extended work, the digital map, serves as work to fill the gap where American literature has misrepresented Native people or just not at all. I thinking the use of “we” here embodies that same effort to truly represent Native Americans through literature. I am about to have to part ways with many of the friends and teachers I have been with for years. I have never been to a school outside of Silver Creek, my family roots run deep within the community, parting ways with this is something I think I am far from prepared for. Often we hesitate not because it will hurt, but because it is different. We also see a reoccurring theme of visibility here, in a building of predominantly black people, they are all on the same playing field. Supercargo is blatantly not doing his job and this calls for justice. Many things did weigh into this brawl none of which are order. Because it seems to be the most spoken of misconduct, he is at his peak visibility, even though he does not seem to want to be. We found out that the black men from the college have given him trouble and that the white men offer him nothing but help. A few paragraphs later we see Mr. Norton give him a handsome amount of money. I believe these gestures from white men are only carried out to make them feel better, along with this I believe that the actions of the black men around Trueblood are only out of spite of his visibility for the unspeakable thing the happened with him and his daughter. Arnold responds with "easy for you to say" Jack's response to his outburst is "have you taken your medication?" This brings me back to one of the articles of the week we had. By bringing up his disability, Jack has reduced Arnold to something less, rendering his argument or side of the conversation invalid. Although I am sure that it was not meant in this respect, from an outsider looking in, it does seem to belittle Arnold. A common theme we saw when consuming the text was that those living with mental disabilities are often labeled by their disability, we saw this when Elyn Saks was labeled as dangerous because of her disability. We see this again in the early part of the film when the Neighbor referred to those with disabilities as "retarded". To further push on this idea when we were to watch a video produced by Shane and Hannah, we saw that although Shane and Hannah may have had a more difficult time with everyday tasks, it did not limit them when setting goals. This is what we got a glimpse of in the beginning, when talking about his friends Jack Palmer lists all of their occupations. Although living with disabilities, all of his friends are working members of society. Categorizing them as anything less is unjust.
