Firstly, the entire chapter is about how Henrietta's name first went public after George Gey's death, which is a crucial point in her history. However, the passage also included little scientific discoveries that may have been helpful back then. For example, scientists later discovered that Henrietta had been initially misdiagnosed. They also learned about cell contamination the hard way, when they found cell cultures in Russia with traces of HeLa. publicization of Henrietta's true identity and how the world finally learned of her contributions to science. The author begins with the death of George Gey, the biologist responsible for propagating HeLa cell line. Before Gey dies, his wife, Margaret, decided to call in the members of the Gey lab's staff to operate on her husband. Gey attempted to grow his own line of cancer cells, but unfortunately, the surgeons worried that cutting into his cancer might kill him. After this failed attempt at making his own immortal cell line, Gey tried to help advance science before he died by offering himself up as a patient with pancreatic cancer to experiment on. There were many offers, but in the end, all treatments left him weak and withered. Before Gey died, he told his former assistant, Mary Kubicek that it was fine to release Henrietta's name to the public because of the amount of time that had passed. A few months after Gey's death, a man named Howard Jones decided to write an article about the HeLa cell line as a tribute to Gey's work. During his research, Jones found out that the original pathologist had misinterpreted and mislabeled Henrietta's cancer, which wasn't a surprise at the time, since the two types of cancer shared many characteristics. However, the importance of Jones' article was the fact that his article was the first time Henrietta's real name was published (along with a photograph). The problem was that the article was published into a small science newsletter and therefore, her identity wasn't widely known just yet. At the same time as this, Richard Nixon, president of the United States at the time, launched the War on Cancer, designating $1.5 billion dollars for cancer research. He believed that the cure for cancer could be discovered in 5 years. However, there was a problem with all the cancer research at the time: all cell cultures had been contaminated with the HeLa cell line. This theory, that was put forth by Stanley Gartler, was rejected for a long period of time until Nelson-Rees, the director of cell culture at the Naval laboratory, discovered that some Russian cancer cells tested in his lab turned out to be from Henrietta Lacks, despite opposing claims from the Russians. This large scale contamination of Russian cells excited the media and before long, famous newspapers all over the world were confirming Gartler's theory and telling the story of how Henrietta's cells had contaminated countless labs. Suddenly, the press was intrigued by the woman behind the HeLa cell line, but most articles called her Helen Larsen or Helen Lane. Fortunately, scientists finally decided to get to the bottom of the story. Starting with a man named J. Douglas, who wrote a letter asking for the true identity of HeLa that was later published by a popular journal. He received a letter back from Howard W. Jones that confirmed that HeLa's real name was Henrietta Lacks. Wed, 17 Feb 2021 02:56:51 -0500 Chapter 6 Summary https://nowcomment.com/documents/254672?scroll_to=2339430 https://nowcomment.com/documents/254672?scroll_to=2339430 In this chapter, Rebecca Skloot describes her first experiences with contacting the Lacks family in 1999. This is a huge contrast from the previous five chapters, which all described events from Henrietta Lack's past. Rebecca initially writes about her encounter with Roland Pattillo, a professor of gynecology, who is strongly against the idea of her contacting Henrietta's family. However, after a lot of convincing and being put to the test on her knowledge of African-Americans and science, Rebecca finally convinces Pattillo to give her Deborah Lack's contact information, who is the daughter of Henriette. Roland Pattillo then proceeds to give Skloot some precautionary advice on how act when contacting the family, since the whole HeLa cell deal has already caused them a lot of stress. Now equipped with Deborah's contact information, Rebecca calls her almost instantly, eager to learn more about the woman who she is writing her book about. To her surprise, Deborah is extremely intrigued by the notion of a book dedicated to her mother and begins to outline "a lifetime of information... from stories of her father...grandfather, cousins, mother..." During this time, Rebecca takes notes frantically and gets some good details, but unfortunately she learns that Deborah doesn't know as much about her mother as she had expected. Following their long phone call, Deborah makes Rebecca promise to call her on Monday. However, when Monday arrives, Deborah breaks the bad news that her brother's and father don't approve of the writing of her book. She provides the contact information for two of her brothers and her father, "Day" Lacks. After many attempts at calling them on a daily basis, Rebecca is finally successful calling Day. The phones is exchanged between various people, but she eventually gets the opportunity to speak to Day. Unfortunately, Day doesn't seem to understand her intentions and hangs up the phone.
