Also, people (especially in the south) held on to their grudges from the consequences of the civil war, and in their minds, It was easy to blame a black person for anything as a "punishment" for aiding to their confederate loss. It also shows how alone they were in the workplace. Since nobody volunteered to help and it was "improper" of them to ask, they had to do everything on their own which must've been extremely frustrating and difficult. After my first read, I had the same thoughts as you. It's completely unfair that people had to learn as children how unjust the world around them was purely based on the fact that they were born with a different skin color. Not to mention that a lot of them had to learn through traumatizing expierences. When the bottle incident happened he was a normal child who didn't hold any prejudices over anyone.
