I agree. I feel like the two White men believed that he was stepping out of his boundaries and disrespecting them by trying to learn more.

They may have thought that he was aiming to be an equal to them. The common logic at this time that Black people could never be equal to White people in any form is completely disgusting. White people would deny education to Black people as some kind of method to ensure that White people were "superior".

Publicly beating Black was so normalized that even a beating as terrible and disgusting as the one Richard witnessed was considered "lucky" and "merciful".

This scene also shows how much more corrupt the police were at the time. He watched White men drag a Black women screaming and crying into a shop and abuse her, and then waited for her to come out knowing what state she would be in and arrest her. He most likely did this for no other reason than thinking that she, as a Black woman, was not a human and was below him.

This kind of power dynamic abuse happened a lot. There was no win in this situation for Richard, and Pease and Morrie knew that.

The two White men knew that they could say whatever they wanted to get Richard out of the factory, and no one would contest them because no one would believe a Black man's word over two White men. But was there ever anything that Richard did to make those two men hate him? Probably not. They hated him for the fact that he was Black. This discrimination and prejudiced power dynamic didn't just exist in the workplace, it existed everywhere for Black people.

The two White men who were tasked with teaching him actively denied him any experience or education.

White people didn't see Black people as equals. They didn't think they deserved the training and education that White people did. This also ties into the Jim Crow schools, in which they segregated the schools by race and didn't allow Black children to learn at White schools, which had overall better teaching and education quality.

Richard's mother's immediate response to finding out that he fought a White person was to tell him that in a fight like that, he should run away rather than defending himself.

This reinforces the idea that in a situation where a Black person and a White person are at odds, people will never side with the Black person. No matter who instigated it, people will see the White kids as the victims. A fight like this could endanger Richard's life, his family, and their jobs, even if it was unfair and prejudiced.
