He got the chance to actually interact with others safely without worry. There were opportunities to attend black churches and schools. The children don't understand the full consequences. The parents came from the best intentions. Any one would feel frustrated if their child was put in any danger or risk. Back then the environment for them was extremely tough, they couldn't live a normal life. Putting your family at risk would be very dangerous and the kids might not understand that completely which explains how the parents treated them. The parents were going through extreme stress as well, it's difficult to parent through it.
