Računar je složeni uređaj koji služi za izvršavanje matematičkih operacija ili kontrolnih operacija koje se mogu izraziti u numeričkom ili logičkom obliku. Računar se najčešće definiše kao elektronska, digitalna, reprogramabilna mašinu koja može da obavlja logičko matematičke operacije, unos, obradu i pamćenje podataka. Elektronska znači da osnov građe računara čine elektronske komponente, digitalna da obavlja operacije sa brojevima (digit - broj), reprogramibilna znači da se redosled operacija može programirati i menjati.

7. Džon Fon Nojman (Von Neumann) – prvi računar sa memorisanim programom (1946.god. ).Fon Nojmanov računar je prva generacija računara. Doradio je ENIAK u EDVAC sa magnetnim diskovima gde su se memorisali programi i podaci. Osnovni principi univerzalnog fon Nojmanovog računara opšte namjene su da struktura, tj. građa računara (hardware) ne zavisi od zadatka koji se na njemu rešava. Računar se programira sadržajem memorije. U memoriju se učitava odgovarajući program koji predstavlja niz naredbi koje se sekvencijalno izvršavaju. Istovremeno se izvršava samo jedna naredba. Razlika u odnosu na sledeće generacije je uglavnom u tehnologiji izrade, brzini, veličini memorije, količini poslova koje može istovremeno raditi itd.

I – generacija se odlikovala vakumskim cevima kao aktivnim elementima. Ovi elementi su veličine kućnih sijalica, trošile su veliku električnu energiju a proizvodile veliku količinu toplote. Imali su magnetne trake i doboše koji su se koristili kao memorija za skladištenje programa i podataka (ENIAC i EDVAC ). Programiralo se u mašinskom kodu jer nisu postojali viših programskih jezika.

II – generacija se odlikovala tranzistorima kao aktivnim elektronskim komponentama. Bilo su manji, jeftinij manje su trošili električne energije i manje su razvijali toplotu za razliku od elektronskih cevi. IBM postaje vodeća frma za proizvodnju računara. Radio je na programskom jeziku Flow Matic (Grejs Marej ga je razvila), na kome sun se kasnije razvili jezici COBOL, FORTRAN, ALGOL i LISP.

Kod ovih računara korišćene su magnetne trake umesto magnetnih diskova za memoriju, bili su brži u izvođenju operacija, manje su trošili električnu energiju, bili su malih dimenzija i nskih cena.

Prvi PC MITS Altair pojavio se 1975god. Projektovali su ga Ed Roberts i Bill Yates a bio je namenjen hobistima. Imao je memoriju 256B, nije imao tastaturu, ekran, štampač ni eksternu memoriju. Programirao se uz pomoć prekidača na kućištu a kao izlaz koristio sijalice. Predhodno je 1971 god. proizveden čip mikroprocesor (Intel – Marcian Hof) četvorobitni sofisticirani centralni procesor koji otvara put širokoj primeni računara.
