Konvencionalno je usvojeno da se naelektrisanje koje se dobija kada se staklena šipka protrlja svilom označi kao pozitivno, a naelektrisanje koje nastaje kada se šipka od ebonita protrlja krznom kao negativno. Naelektrisanje može da prelazi sa jednog na drugo mesto tela ili sa tela na telo.

Atom se sastoji od jezgra i omotača. Atomsko jezgro sadrži dve vrste čestica približno istih masa: pozitivno naelektrisane protone i neutralne neutrone. Omotač atoma čine negativno naelektrisani elektroni. Količine naelektrisanja elektrona i protona su jednake, ali suprotnog predznaka. Pošto je broj elektrona u omotaču atoma jednak broju protona u njegovom jezgru, to je atom u običnom stanju, električno neutralan. Kada se taj odnos promeni, narušava se ravnoteža. Ako npr. jedan elektron napusti atom, onda taj atom postaje nosilac jednog pozitivnog elementarnog naelektrisanja (pozitivan jon). Takav proces naziva se jonizacija.

Овде би требало нагласити да су протони наелектрисања везана у језгру јаким нуклеарним силама (која надвладавају одбојну Кулонову силу између 2 протона), па се при наелектрисавању тела могу кретати само електрони (са једног тела на друго)

Целобројни умножак значи да са једног тела на друго може прећи само “цео број” електрона. Нпр. не могу прећи 2,5 (два цела и јена половина) електрона.

Zakon koji definiše uzajamno delovanje naelektrisanih tela (čestica) čije su dimenzije zanemarljive u odnosu na međusobna rastojanja, pod uslovom da se ta tela nalaze u stanju relativnog mirovanja naziva se Kulonov zakon, u čast francuskog fizičara Kulona koji je eksperimentalnim putem otkrio ovaj zakon 1785. godine.
