The flow of this playlist seems to be from adding a pin to a place on a map and saying why you chose it to telling a story about that place and posting a photo there. Then youth read a poem, a mentor text, and other stories/photos to inspire their own writing. Finally they share thei poem on the map with their photo.

I also had a good time looking around at this rich archive celebrating “Poetry of Place” in Nebraska: https://www.unl.edu/newp/poetry-of-place
And this leads me to thinking about our purpose with this playlist which seems to be about bringing together youth from different places onto one map. And that leads me to think that it might be nice to have a variety of mentor poems from different places.
I’m also thinking that this XP is key to this playlist because it has the potential of inspiring new skills.
I’m also thinking of how to bring some of Kenneth Koch’s thinking into this XP: https://www.poets.org/poetsorg/onteaching/rose-where-did-you-get-red
There is also Dawn’s students’ ISO poetry — though this is not poetry of place — https://www.youthvoices.live/category/iso-in-the-style-of/
And this is a reminder that we could pretty easily do all of this with a revision of the Where I’m From playlist: https://www.youthvoices.live/playlists/whereimfrom/
Maybe that is the way to go here?

There is a limit on the number of pins one can place in each layer, but if we create a layer for each of the Cities of Learning and Networks? we can probably address this problem AND create a structure that might be inviting.
A bigger question is if we want youth identifying a place in XP1 — writing about it there more openly (probably a good thing) and adding a photo (or photos and videos? — all possible) — then writing a more carefully crafted poem and adding it to the same maker in XP4? I’ll try some of this out and see what it looks like.

What if, instead, we set up a public Google Community, something like Our Places, Our Poems. I noticed that a member (and membership can be open) can in one post add a location pin that links to a map {although not a common one, which is a compromise), as many images as we would want, and text that can be edited. Also post have comments and unique URLs that are easy to find for submission on LRNG.

I think that we could suggest point-of-view writing here, and that this actually opens up the possibilities for a writer, like this XP: https://www.lrng.org/youth-voices/playlist/my-beautiful-neighborhood/onlineXp/point-of-view-writing-about-a-photo

I think the point-of-view XP works well here. This XP has potential to move students beyond their own perspectives of a place to get a richer sense of that place.

This is an example of how this might work: https://www.google.com/maps/d/u/0/edit?hl=en&mid=1X4xvXkBPbRHaGfTz8JHFtZse1hA&ll=41.10434346760301%2C-73.91652915039072&z=10

I’m thinking about this. Should the maps contain both the initial writing to expand ideas about a place and also contain the more polished pieces which synthesize these perspectives (at least potentially)?
