This could also be useful to app designers in maybe creating a filter on posts that does not allow hateful or hurtful words/comments.

I think it is important for parents raising young children now to have it put into their children’s heads that what people say over social media does not mean anything. I think parents also need to check in with their children on how their mental health is doing. Kids might say that their depression is because of social media, but it could really be about a lot of other things.

Why now? Today, 89 percent of teens have their own smartphones (compared with 41 percent in 2012). They grew up right alongside Instagram and Snapchat. They do research papers on Google Classroom, find emotional support on teen forums, share poetry on Tumblr, and are more likely to text “I love you” before they’d ever say it to your face. But concerns over the negative consequences of social media have grown in tandem with its popularity among teens. Grim reports on teen suicide, addiction, cyberbullying, and eroding social skills have caused many people, from parents to teachers to the tech industry itself, to look at social media as a potential contributor — if not the cause — of these issues. This survey clarifies some of those concerns and draws attention to the reasons some kids are deeply affected by — and connected to — their digital worlds. Here are some of the key findings from the report, what they mean for you and your teen, and what you can do about them.

This statistic jumped out at me immediately when I read it, because in my mind 2012 was not long enough ago to where there should be a 36 percent difference in constant social media usage compared to today. However, I then realized that this was around the time that this generation was beginning to use smartphones. Ages 12, 13, 14, etc. While I was always conscious about the fact that our generation initiated the normalization of social media usage, it never dawned on me just how big of an impact we really had when it came to the boom of social media; enough to more than double the amount of teens that use it regularly.

I think the title of this paragraph is completely ridiculous. Yes, social media has become a major part of all of our lives growing up, but saying we “can’t stop” is just wrong. I would argue that most people use social media as a way of communication and entertainment, and there really is not anything wrong with that. It seems as though we get a bad rep for being on our phones a lot from older generations because it was different than their childhood, so they view it as wrong.

If smart phones had been around when our grandparents were young they too would have used their phones just as much as our generation.

What you can do. They know it’s getting in the way of important things, but they have a hard time regulating their own use. So, help them! Encourage them to be mindful of how they feel before, during, and after a social media session. If a certain friend or topic bugs them or brings them down, they can block that person or mute the thread. Challenge them to do a task with focused concentration and without getting distracted for longer and longer periods (set a timer!) .
