Hungary was the first country to close its borders when around one million refugees arrived on European soil in 2015. The country's far-right Fidesz party swiftly positioned itself as the self-proclaimed defender of "Christian Europe" under the leadership of anti-immigrant nationalist leader, Prime Minister Viktor Orban.

Following a global trend, growing numbers of Hungary's youth are joining far-right wing and neo-Nazi movements, such as the Highwaymen's Army (Betyarsereg), to fight for a way of life they believe is under threat.

THE MASS migration from Venezuela has become a topic of political debate, bilateral negotiations between countries and the work of NGOs — and, no less importantly, of ideological propaganda.

The Venezuelan government denies the dimensions of this exodus and promotes a “return” plan for publicity purposes. Meanwhile, xenophobia is growing in Latin America, and the need to work on new ways to tackle the problem is more and more evident.

Like a timebomb waiting to go off, Europe’s smouldering immigration problem exploded into a full-blown crisis last week. The US experienced a similar delayed upheaval, after the human consequences of Donald Trump’s “zero tolerance” border policy became too painful to ignore. The two events are closely linked, the product of systemic international failings.

The longstanding inability of governments to cope with challenges posed by the increased flows of refugees, asylum seekers and economic migrants is common to both sides of the Atlantic. The ensuing vacuum has been filled by opportunists such as Trump, maverick fringe parties, andrightwing zealots such as Italy’s new interior minister, Matteo Salvini, and the US attorney general, Jeff Sessions. ...

Xenophobic violence against foreign nationals in South Africa has worsened. South Africa witnessed widespread xenophobic attacks since 1994 in provinces such as Gauteng, Western Cape, Free State, Limpopo and KwaZulu Natal. There has been this and much speculation of the causes and triggers of the violence. A number of reports have highlighted various issues contributing to xenophobia; some of which include poor service delivery and competition for resources. The type of leadership within communities might have an impact on whether or not xenophobic attacks occur in certain communities, which talks to issues of governance. The issue is not only about foreign nationals and their rights, but about the safety of all who live in South Africa. Most incidents of violent attacks have been carried out by black South Africans.

America is the land of immigrants. This unique quality is both a blessing and a source of ongoing problems. The blessing arrives from the fact that it is the composition of many different immigrant populations that brought to the young country talent, expertise, skills, hard work and dedication that contributed to the building of the nation and making it the most powerful on earth. It does not take long for one to look at America and witness the world assembled in its mosaic. Yet, and despite the uniqueness of this blessing, the American mosaic has its troubling aspect as well, manifested in tensions that burp out in forms of racism. However, due to the collective good of the American people and the progressive policies to create a better and more integrated and cooperative human society, this ugly symptom is gradually fading and retreating to the trash bin of history. The recent election of Barack Obama by majority of Americans as the first African-American President of the United States is an example of this direction.

With globalization, however, racism is giving birth to another form of hate and discrimination. It...
