Byline: KAREN BUTLER

WASHINGTON, Dec. 14 (UPI) -- The Breakfast Club, The Lion King, The Princess Bride, Rushmore and Paris is Burning have been inducted into the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress.

Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden announced Wednesday the selection of the latest 25 movies to be preserved due to "their cultural, historic or aesthetic importance."

The additions span the period of 1903-98 and also include The Musketeers of Pig Alley, Life of An American Fireman, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Steamboat Bill, Jr., Lost Horizon, Ball of Fire, East of Eden, Blackboard Jungle, The Birds, Funny Girl, Putney Swope, Who Framed Roger Rabbit? and Thelma & Louise.

"Motion pictures document our history and culture and serve as a mirror of our collective experiences," Hayden said in statement. "The National Film Registry embraces the richness and diversity of film as an art form and celebrates the people who create the magic of cinema."

To date, 700 films have been included on the registry.
