a. Stealing would be acceptable if it wasn’t against the law and there was no consequence. I disagree because stealing from someone or something isn’t okay and should have some type of consequence.
b. A family is defined only by the people to whom you are related. I disagree because someone could have a bad acting cousin or sibling but that shouldn’t define them as a bad acting person too.
c. It is acceptable to break the law if it is necessary for survival. I agree, kind of, because if someone is less fortunate than someone else and doesn’t necessarily have the money to get medicine or other important things to keep someone alive then they should do it.

not the right thing to do because that person earned that piece of property by working for it.
b.) I do not agree that a family is defined by only the people you are related to. By definition, it may say that a family is only people you are related to, but to many people they can consider close friends or relationships with other people as family.
c.) I agree that it is acceptable to break the law in order to survive because if you do not break the law you would die if you were in a position to survive. Therefore getting in a little trouble to survive is better than not getting in trouble and dying.
d.) I do not agree that if everyone believes a lie the truth becomes unnecessary. I believe this because no matter how many people believe the lie, a lie is still a lie and not the truth. The truth always stays relevant because it is always the highest power and that is what I believe is right.
E.) I disagree that it is always right to tell on a family member if they break the law, even if it means destroying your relationship with them. I disagree because it depends the extent of the law they broke. If they killed someone, yes, it is right to tell on them. If they were speeding or doing something that was minor, I do not believe it is right to tell on them because those are petty laws and not worth breaking up a relationship over.

He is a player and he gets a new woman every week. I think that he does this so he is the one that does not get played.

I also agree with your stated options for the anticipation questions, and if you had to do something that helps others but wasn’t beneficial to yourself would you do it. The last sentence of your answer two question to me was the most intriguing. In the story earlier it talks about how before he had his feelings hurt by girls which is why now he is so cold to girls now.

I know the 1960’s were a rough time simply because some people weren’t as fortunate as others and didn’t have the same opportunities. Also there were a lot of social groups called clicks. For example, there were the socs, greasers, and the hippies. This clicks didn’t get along and weren’t very nice to each other. In addition, there was a lot of bullying and people beating each other up. This subject relates to today’s teens both good and bad because back in the 1960’s the bullying was really bad because when people hazed each other it usually ended up in someone getting severely injured or killed, but nowadays bullying isn’t as big an issue and doesn’t get super out of hand. The good thing about today’s teens is that the click groups aren’t as bad as the 1960’s in terms of people separating themselves from one another.

My two discussion questions are: How far do you think Mark will continue to develop on the character scale? And why do you think Bryon starts to think about what they are doing is wrong and they should grow up?

I think that Mark will probably take it easy for a while with helping people, and then he will continue to help those that he knows will not hurt him.

I disagree stealing still isn’t acceptable even if it wasn’t against the law and with no consequence. Stealing is stealing and you shouldn’t do it because you are taking things that are not your which is wrong.
I agree I do think it is acceptable to break the law if it is for survival. It’s a life or death situation and either way there is a consequence.
I think that if everyone is believing a lie it is necessary to say something. The truth should be told no matter what happens.

1.Anticipation questions: React to 3/5 of these statements, state whether you agree or disagree and give a two sentence explanation to each
a. stealing would be acceptable if it wasn’t against the law and there was no consequence
No It wouldn’t be acceptable. Even if it wasn’t against the law, you wouldn’t be able to tell how hard that person worked for that object or what they had to go through.
b. a family is defined only be the people to whom you are related
Family doesn’t end in blood. A family is defined by who you love and care for.
c.It is acceptable to break the law if it is necessary for survival
Yes it is acceptable because sometimes that is just what some people have to do to get by in life.
d. If everyone believes a lie, the truth becomes unnecessary
Not necessarily. Believing a lie can be very dangerous. Where as the truth, which may not be very likable, could make the situation a whole lot clearer.
e. It is right to tell on a family member who breaks the law, even if it means destroying the relationship.
Yes. Although the truth may hurt and the relationship is hurt, your family member should know that you are doing the right thing. And that will help them out more in the long run than just showing them unconditional love without consequences.

During this decade there were a lot of new ideas that were being spread, like for example, the peace movements. Hippies, peace, and self love were all around. But at the same time lots of families were struggling to put food on the table.
Kids nowadays and kids back then were quite different, however they were also very similar. In the 1960s it was acceptable to smoke and be in gangs. Today kids vape, although it isn’t acceptable it still happens. But of course there isn’t as much violence as before and today we respect the authorities a lot more. All kids have ever wanted to do was to fit in, and I think that is the most common connection between then and now.

Why is Bryon more dependable than Mark?
Why does Bryon re access Mark’s morals/character?

I agreed with all your statements and opinions for question 1. My favorite line of your response to question two was the like last line where you pointed out what was common between then and now. I feel that Bryon is more dependable in part from his upbringing with always having his mom while Mark unfortunately lost his parents which stunted his emotional development.

Anticipation Questions
A. Stealing isn’t acceptable even if it isn’t against the law. This is because you are taking something that someone else worked hard for instead of working to buy it yourself. This is unfair to people that work for all they have.
B. A family can be an odd and eclectic mix of unrelated people that you love and care for. There are many people in your life that you care for that can be non-blood related to you.
D. We as people are decidedly “fickle” and therefore we are susceptible to believing in lies which is why the truth is always necessary even when it’s very difficult
The 1960’s was a time of change, strife and protest. There were protests for the war in Vietnam, protests for civil rights and the assignations of many important historical figures such as Martin Luther King Jr.. The 1960’s and today are very common we are also having protests over civil rights but instead of being race based it is now focused on the LGBTQ community. We also have lots of strife involving our current president and being a country divided between two political parties, Democrat or Republican. One difference is that compared to the sixties we have developed tremendously technologically.
Why is it that Mark’s moral compass seems so underdeveloped? Why does Mark seem to have very little care for the fact that the items he steals comes from hardworking people?

1. a. I disagree because it is unfair to steal from other people. Its unfair because they worked for it and if you steal then you get it without having to work.
b. I disagree because sometimes friends and others treat you better than actual family. In instances people don’t even consider their relatives as family.
e. I agree to a certain point. If the family member isn’t affecting anyone else then it is okay not to turn them in. If they are like stealing or something like that then they should turn them in.
2. I know that the 60’s was full of hippies and some drug problems. Towards the end of the 60’s was the start of the Vietnam War and I know that that was controversial. Teens back then had illegal stuff more available to them. It is still fairly easy for a teen now to smoke or get their hands on some drugs.I think that teens in some more urban places are more like the teens in the book because of the rougher lifestyle.
3. Why are Bryon and Mark always looking for fights? Is it because they find it fun?
Do you think the morals of Bryon will improve to be more similar to M&M’s?
