Lesson Plan
Class:Secondary 5
Topic:graph of function
Duration:25 mins
Learning prerequisites:
1.Find the value of function
2.understand the graph of quadratic function and linear function
3.recognize the transformations of the function f (x) including f (x) + k , f (x + k) , k f (x) and f (kx)
Learning objective:
1.understand the transformation of the function.
Teaching strategies:
Using a game to revise how to find the value of a function and the transformation of the function. The game require students to use transformation of graph to estimate the value of function for a given x, also they have to know which move will benefit more for their choice(s). Through the game, student will rapidly finding value of function and thinking about the graph of function, lead them more familiar with the transformation of function.
Teaching plan:
5 mins Quick revision on the four types of transformation of function.
Using Desmos to show the graph of y=x^2 -1 , then ask student to what if we do addition inside the bracket, whatever student answer, teacher will use Desmos to show the result and write down the result on whiteboard.
20 minsplay game: “Cheaty Mages!” function version (函數版詐賭巫師)
This function version “Cheaty Mages!” is a modify version base on the original game “Cheaty Mages!” . The function version is modify by myself and the game rule will attach below. Simply the game have 3 parts: 1. Choose the warrior(s) that you think he has the highest chance to win, 2. Using spell(s) to change the function in order benefit the warrior or damage the warrior, to make him win or lose the battle, 3. Calculate the value of each warrior to determine who win the battle.
Teacher may use 5 mins to explain the rules, and 15mins game time. Student will separate into four groups, in order to let student discuss with their groupmate, also it is hard for individuals to handle all the information while they are first time in this game, so play in groups is more possible for this setting. (although this game is design for 3-6 players play it individually) while student gets more familiar with the game, teacher may give smaller copy for them to play after class.
Teacher may use Desmos or GeoGebra to show those warriors function graph at the beginning, in order to help student recognize the graph and plan their strategy in this round. Teacher should remind student to think about how the function graph change while you use the spell.
Teacher may also suggest student to divide their work with their groupmate. And beware some student will dominate the discuss and make some student cannot involve in this game. Teacher should give some hints to those groups cannot make decisions, such as how the spell change the value of function, the order to use the spell etc.
