The short story, “The Lesson,” “Everyday Use,” “How to Date a Brown Girl (Black Girl, White Girl, or Halfie)” depict a major conlfict in the American society. The story “Everyday Use,” talks abot a mother and her daughter whose relationships are estrnged due to disagrement over hertigae and culture. The story “The Lesson,” talks about how wealth in America is unevenly distributed. The story “How to Date a Brown Girl (Black Girl, White Girl, or Halfie),” talks about dating is race and social class oriented, rather moral and manners oriented.
The three stories describe their characters as a poverty-stricken peolpe. The story “Everyday Use,” charctarized the protganist, Mama, as a person who lives in Africa and her house was eaten by the flames. This immediately establish that Mama is a poor person, because once your dwelling get burned down, you basically lose everything. The story “The Lesson,” focused on a group of children who live in the slum in NYC. Since they live in the slum, they are immediately poor. The story “How to Date a Brown Girl (Black Girl, White Girl, or Halfie),” presented the protganist as someone who is trying to hide all the hints in his house to date a girl for a different racr than his.
