Letter to Alice Walker

Dear Alice Walker,

I am impressed by your short story “Everyday Use,”. The protagonist's, Maggie, whose body got burned because when her house caught on fire. This incident uprooted her confidence.

One sentence that stands out for me is, “On TV mother and child embrace and smile into each other's faces. Sometimes the mother and father weep, the child wraps them in her arms and leaned across the table to tell how she would not have made it without their help. I have seen these programs.” I think these lines are thought-provoking because Maggie is dreaming about a reunion with her family. She wants to make her feel proud and pursue success. She beautifully gave a real example that emphasized her desire. She is not getting anything from her family or even society in which he is rightful. The thing is, in order to get something she should fight for herself. Despite the fact that she has a lack of knowledge about education and life in general.

Another line that stands out for me is, “Dee wanted nice things. A yellow organdy dress to wear to her graduation from high school; black pumps to match a green suit she'd made from an old suit somebody gave me.” I think this line is compelling because Dee wants to follow the style of the modern generation. She is very stylish and gained everything according to her wishes. She wants to look pretty and perfect. She got all the opportunities that Maggie did not get.

Your story helps me to understand that we should work for what we want to have in life instead of suffering inside of it. It is always better to speak for ourselves and take a step towards our own satisfaction.

Thanks for your story. I look forward to seeing what you make next. I would like to read some inspirational stories. How people positively change their lives through education or other things. In addition, how they overcome certain kinds of difficult situations.
