Letter to Diaz

Dear Junot Diaz:

I am impressed by your short story, “How to Date a Browngirl, Blackgirl, Whitegirl, or Halfie,” It shows how a racial group can be judgemental to other races. Also it makes me wonder if you get bothered when people judge you based on your race. In your short story you are giving people instructions on how to date girls from other races. Your narration of the story shows how insecure you are about your ethnicity and social background. The white people are preconceived as judgemental and racist but your narration of the story shows that anybody can be judgemental no matter what race they are .

One line that stands out to me is “Clear the government cheese from the refrigerator. If the girl’s from the Terrace, stack the boxes in the crisper. If she’s from the Park or Society Hill, then hide the cheese in the cabinet above the oven, where she’ll never see it” because it elaborates on how you view other people from different social classes or backgrounds and it also shows how insecure you are . it also shows how people hide their identity in order to fit in the society.

Your story helps me understand how the wealth gap in the U.S society created a distance between people. Also it makes people be ashamed of their identity and culture because they don’t find it welcoming .
