Renee should be in 9th grade this year, but she has been homeschooled since the middle of 5th grade when her parents pulled her out of the public school system due to “inequities” in the system. At the time, Renee was attending a magnet school for the creative and performing arts. She loved singing and dancing in school productions, but never received solo parts for singing or special ensemble parts for dancing troupes. She has always been tall and thin and suffers from a mild form of scoliosis; her hunched back and drawn in shoulders make people think she is lazy or withdrawn when the opposite is true.
Renee has done most of her homeschooling through online curriculum programs, so she is used to independent work, reading and answering questions, and small individual projects. She would like to start back to school in tenth grade and is trying to prepare herself and show herself ready. When not doing schoolwork, she spends a lot of her time in online platforms like Snapchat, Instagram, Tumblr, and Facebook--in fact, pretty much all of her reading happens in these spaces.
Renee has done quite well on the pageant scene and in the modeling world in the past few years, and actually has a modeling agent and a few contracts. She has done numerous photoshoots with online magazines, and has even done interview work for them, writing and publishing blogs about special events, especially philanthropic events.
Renee is passionate about body positivity and combating media images that (re)produce body image issues--too fat, too thin, bad posture, crooked smile, crazy hair, etc… She is also interested in LGBTQ issues and would love to be a part of a GSA or march in a Pride Parade. Her other passion is animals, especially the ethical treatment of animals as pets, in zoos, and even in the wild. These are the things that drive her to write on her own and to share her work with others. On the side, in private, she also likes to write fanfiction.
How could badges help Renee prepare to re-enter public school or continue with her present activist work?

Although I think badges are important in recognizing and helping students appreciate their progress and successes – I think a student like Renee could benefit from having her focus be on collaborative work and her social/in-person skills and activities. I would like to see notes on this in her descriptive review as working in a social space is essential to being in a high school classroom.
