Ang epekto ng coronavirus pandemic ay hindi nagtatapos sa mga pasyenteng napupunta sa mga ospital. Ito ay makikita rin sa kabuhayan ng mga Pilipino.

Abot 5 milyong Pilipino ang mawawalan ng trabaho dahil sa coronavirus pandemic, ayon sa Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE). Ang bilang na ito ay maaaring tumaas, depende kung gaano kalakas ang impact ng pandemic sa ekonomiya ng Pilipinas sa mga susunod na buwan.

Sa podcast na ito, pag-uusapan nina Rappler labor reporter Aika Rey at researcher-writer Jodesz Gavilan kung bakit aabot sa ganitong bilang ng mga Pilipino ang nawalan at mawawalan ng trabaho, anu-ano ang mga programa ng gobyerno para tulungan ang mga mamamayan, at paano makakabangon muli ang ating ekonomiya.

Ano ang worst case senario? Ayon kay Rey:

Kung hindi pa magjumpstart ang economy natin, a lot of businesses will have to close down and it's going to be hard, especially for the small businesses, to go back up. Right now, may mga nakikita na ako at nakakausap na business na really have to close kasi nga hindi na nila kayang sustehan ang mga empleyado nila. Earlier, we also heard na may school na nagsabi na hindi na nila kaya mag-operate sa next school year. I mean, it's an effect of the pandemic na not a lot of people have money to buy, to enrol their students. Worst case scenario, marami talagang mawawalan ng trabaho. Itong 10 million na sinasabi ng House na posible at sinasabi ni Secretary Silvestre Bello na posibleng mangyari, worst case scenario.

Handa ba ang gobyerno sa maaaring epekto ng kawalan ng trabaho sa ekonomiya? Ano ang mga dapat na programang bigyang prayoridad para sa mga mamamayan?

Ang nakahain na economic stimulus package sa Kamara ang isang maaaring makatulong. Ngunit dapat ito ay maging sapat dahil:

Sinasabi kasi ng senators, even some of the lawmakers sa House, that if you are going to propose a small economic stimulus package program amounting to around P160 billion, it won't be enough to stimulate the economy because ang point nga, because itong pandemic na ito has actually made the economy at the standstill, the government has the responsibility to infuse as much money as they can, as much cash as they can, to push forward iyong economy natin. If the economy is doing great, edi beneficial rin siya for the workers.
