George

Background: George is a Domincan 9th grade student who came to the US in the middle of 5th grade with his mom, sisters, and brother. He lives in East New York and commutes to school in Park Slope. He has been held back twice: once in 3rd grade in the DR, and once in 7th grade in Brooklyn. However, there are two years that are unaccounted for even though George says he has gone to school continuously, so he is considered a student with interrupted formal education. One of the biggest concerns with George is that he misses an average of 1-2 days of school per week either helping his mother or just because he didn’t want to come to school.

Physical presence and gesture: George likes to look around the room and says he has trouble concentrating. Depending on the day, he can be attentive and participate, or he can be disengaged. In certain situations, George has trouble controlling his emotions, especially grief.

Relationships with children and adults: George stays in communication with his teacher by email when he misses class. The document does not describe his interactions with other students.

Activities and interests: George loves art and enjoys drawing. He takes notes with pictures and shows great detail in his work. He also likes playing video games

Formal learning: George takes notes with visual representations of the material. He seems to prefer a visual learning style. He finds science difficult because there are “too many ideas to remember.”
