Grazing is allowing livestock to consume wild vegetation in fields, thus keeping the weeds away, preventing dead patches, and grass contained. Fields that are not grazed will grow tall grass (a fire hazard), develop dead patches, and breeding ground for different kinds of weeds like thistles.

3 Our family owns a brown swiss milk cow, and decided what field was the best for the brown swiss to graze to yield the best milk. Field 1 contained young fresh grass along with some tall grass, field 2 contained more weeds and dead patches than actual grass. We let the brown swiss graze on the field 2 for half the summer, letting her consume weeds along with grass. And in return received milk that had a sour taste. The brown swiss was turned out into field 1, consuming more fresh grass with less weeds than she was able to in field 2. In return the sour taste in her milk went away, and she provided more milk as well.

4 We don’t think about how the quality of our fields affects the meat and milk products from our livestock. If the livestock consumes poor quality grass then they will yield poor quality milk or meat, livestock on richer grass with yield more quality meat. Which meat product would you choose? In the end it is an easy answer. Which is why grazing is important for us and the planet.
