Task: Henry and Franklin’s speeches employee many rhetorical devices that serve to emphasize key points, make speeches memorable, and move listener’s emotions. Similar to the techniques orators like Henry and Franklin used in their persuasive speeches, advertisers also use rhetorical techniques to sway their audience. Working with a partner, analyze how the author uses techniques in a political advertisement to sway viewers.
Research a national election from the past and the effect of advertising on the outcome. Locate an ad used in the campaign. (Organizations, such as the American Museum of the Moving Image maintain archives of ads.) With your partner, watch the ad and evaluate it using the Evaluation Form for a Political Ad. Write an objective summary of your findings to share in a class discussion on NowComment. Objective summaries should be one paragraph in length, free of biases and grammatical errors. Use the Evaluation Form for a Political Ad to assist in writing the summary. One member from the team will post the ad and summary on NowComment to share with classmates.
