I believe that this is a telling testimony in that it specifically introduces us to a county in Florida, in which terror was happening. Jackson County was the scene of the bloodiest acts of violence. Racial hatred and political conflicts reached an all time, and resulted in bloodshed. The planter class was devastated because of the economy as it depended on slave labor. Many of the planters who controlled the county were now forced to witness the rise of political power of their once slaves. Many planters made large defaults in tax payments inevitable. Thousands of acres of land were sold as a result of this. This combined with the racial hatred turned this county into one of the most dangerous in the South.
