This student does not actually understand the task. He draws his own conclusion, that Jensen is stereotypical and said that the author could make that claim.

If the student looked more closely , he would see that Jensen is not in fact stereotyping, but explaining the examples she saw with scientific facts. It would be better to talk about some of the claims that Jensen made and the evidence she gave to support them. This error could be avoided by asking students to highlight claims and evidence (a formative assessment) before writing.

This student actually did a better job of meeting the requirements of the task. He explains that Jensen used examples from her son to explain her claim. This is accurate and fits the task. The highlighted sections show attention to the requirement

I wonder why the student refers to the author's tone and not a claim the author made. The student gets the gist of the text, but does not give evidence to support it.

He might benefit from the opportunity to underline statements in the text that show that the teen’s behavior is linked to his brain. Perhaps filling out a chart would help this student to organize his thinking.
