One way to explore theme is to consider:
What is the problem/goal?
What attempts are made to resolve the problem or reach the goal?
What happened in the end?
How did the characters react?
What is the author telling us or the message of the story?

Liz L (Dec 15 2021 3:19PM) : The color coding is effective. You can use an additional color to show where students explain details from the text and how they support the theme. Then it is easy to see how well the different criteria have been met. more

The students clearly understand that there can be more than one theme. Each student gave a different theme, but they are all supported by evidence. Your next step is to discuss as a class which theme is best supported and most significant.
