Session 1: Empathetic Learning Communities - 💓
Using Habits of Mind to Promote Social Emotional Learning
Remember the SEL Benchmarks:
● Develop self awareness & self management skills
○ Identify and manage one’s emotions and behavior.
○ Recognize and describe emotions and how they are linked to behavior.
○ Demonstrate control of impulsive behavior.
● Use social awareness & interpersonal skills to establish & maintain positive relationships.
○ Recognize the feelings and perspectives of others.
○ Recognize that others may experience situations differently from oneself.
○ Use listening skills to identify the feelings & perspectives
of others
We use many SEL resources already!
Be intentional about using Sanford Harmony and Brain Power Wellness Activities and think about how they connect to SEL benchmarks.
Mahoney’s Google Slides of 2 suggested student activities related to HOM & SEL. Make a Copy, Modify & TRY!

Session 2: Deepening Our Understanding of Culturally Responsive Pedagogy 🌎
How can we relate to each child?
● Create opportunities for them to share their stories, feelings and experiences.
● Listen with empathy.
● Trust what they tell you.
Get to know each child - culture, family . . . Ask yourself -Are they represented in your classroom environment & materials?
Try some activities:
● Mahoney’s Google Slides of the suggested Self Portrait Drawing Activity and print out facial features and frames.
● After reading a book, ask -
• Which character are you most like? Why?
• What can we learn about ourselves and others from this story?
● Bring in an artifact that represents your family and explain why it is important. (Star Student?)
● Student Voice (& SEL)- Modify and Use Reflection Sheets
● Use books that are diverse:
