Vasiliki M(Jan 20 2022 10:11AM):
Just to clarify, this was done in a G&T class and each target was taught. There were lessons on claim, lessons where we researched, students work together to anticipate counterclaims and rebuttals, etc.

Students were taught the vocabulary and we did spend time on each aspect of the debate to prepare them for the argumentative essay. Students really enjoyed debating and it gave them a visual/demonstration to prepare them for writing argumentative essays later.
ANDREA M(Jan 20 2022 10:00AM):
We discussed knowing your students and making the targets for them but in one classroom, the students are all different. It seems like there would never be targets that meet the needs of most students.
Taniqua S(Jan 20 2022 10:04AM):
Perhaps you can invite students into the process of developing learning targets according to the topic and skill of focus.
Robert A(Jan 20 2022 10:05AM):
During my masters, I shifted from a dominant, student-focused mindset, to an explicit instruction mindset. I'm having an inner-conflict here, because the focus of the direct learning targets from session 3 is highly teacher centered.
Taniqua S(Jan 20 2022 10:09AM):
If it's teacher centered, it is not responsive of students. Students voices must be welcomed at all times. Otherwise, only the needs of the teacher are being prioritized and met.
Taniqua S(Jan 20 2022 10:00AM):
Assessments drive the understanding of learning and the most meaningful form of assessment is that which is student centered.
Taniqua S(Jan 20 2022 10:03AM):
The different assessment types should be incorporated throughout a lesson plan; I think. I'm trying to envision how this form of assessment can be aligned to the workshop model. For example, could "recall" be part of the opening and "process" be the close
Robert A(Jan 20 2022 10:11AM):
I think the processes can also be spread out over the course of a week or month. If you were studying narratives for example, recall and product could be part of the model and criteria creation, as well as planning phase.
ANDREA M(Jan 20 2022 10:02AM):
I think it is important for students to know that this is not linear and they can move forward and then fall back and move forward again.
Taniqua S(Jan 20 2022 10:06AM):
When you say it's important for students to know? Why is it important for them to know? Also, what do you mean by "this is not linear"?
Vasiliki M(Jan 20 2022 10:06AM):
I agree. I think this would be interesting to use in my Advisory class and have students think of strategies they can use to climb the ladder and get out of the pit.
Tyler B(Jan 20 2022 10:09AM):
I like the idea of student centered assessments. It allows students to show their understanding in a way they are able to as opposed to require them to show it in a specific manner.
Robert A(Jan 20 2022 10:03AM):
I'm used to setting goals with students (students create a reading goal, as well as other writing and ELA goals). How would you co-create learning targets? Even when I have used fun, performance assessment, the assignments come from the teacher.
Robert A(Jan 20 2022 10:06AM):
I ran out of space: I do give students options for some assignments, I mean learning targets here in the broader sense of a unit.
[Edited]
Taniqua S(Jan 20 2022 10:08AM):
This is a great question. Here's the thing, as long as students are invited into the process, there is no right or wrong way to co-create. It may be confusing at first and get messy, which is okay. Most of our students have been confused during a lesson.

I think if you clearly lay out the steps, everyone will benefit. You may need to give some support to students who need more.
