Title: While Viewing the video of Ms. Johnson for 20 minutes
"Memoir must be written because each of us must possess a created version of the past. Created: that is, real in the sense of the tangible, made of the stuff of a life lived in place and in history... If we refuse to do the work of creating this personal version of the past, someone else will do it for us"
1. Is Ella's theory of dealing with questions of race and ethnicity a positive or negative influence on Dolores' search for identity? Why or why not?
2. The three essential components of a memoir are setting, situation, and a sharing of reaction and/or realization. What connections might lies, stereotypes, and prejudice have to the memoir written by Ms. Johnson?
3. Are there any problems with what Ms. Johnson has shared? Are there any problems with the questions the interviewer asks?
4. Do you have a follow-up question would you have asked? What more do you want to know?

If one disregards the cause-and-effect nature that governs out universe and applies a more human set of analytical lenses, it becomes clear that the history of our world and that ethnicities that comprise us really play a large part in underpinning our development. My Korean heritage is definitely important to me. My mom was born in Korea, so it remains close in my family history.

Because of how Ella hid and buried her family and origin and developed the act of avoidance and secrets as a lifestyle for Dolores and her siblings, it took extra work for Dolores to uncover that part of her history. She felt that she could not be complete and confident in who she was without being familiar with both sides of her family history and where she came from.

In my opinion, Ella’s actions and beliefs about how the family should handle race helped define and provide a motivation for many of Dolores’s actions. Whether that was a good or bad thing or not really depends on the results. Johnson is the only person capable of deciding whether it was worth it or not.

Ella’s theory harmed Dolore’s identification search. Because she kept a part of herself hidden from Dolores, she didn’t feel like she knew who she was complete. Dolores had to put in extra effort to unearth that portion of her history because Ella hid and buried her family and origins and built the act of avoidance and secrecy as a lifestyle for Dolores and her siblings.

I believe that Ella’s theory isn’t positive or negative but a neutral one not filled with much detail but more facts. She talks a lot about what happened with her parents and current things that were happening when her parents were together but doesn’t add much to Dolores search for identity.

I think that Ella’s theory of dealing with questions of race and ethnicity has a positive intent behind it, but I think that as much as it is her daughter there is also the difference of she is white and her daughter has a side her that is black. I feel like the book has emphasized the lack of understanding and education for Ella who grew up in a family that she knew would not support her decision with Charles.
I think that a part of the positive intent is the want and the motherly need to protect her children from the opinions and hurt that could come out of the truth. The way it may have come across though was shielding Dolores from answers.

The stereotypes, prejudice, etc. are all dependent on the setting. Johnson’s book takes place in several different decades, and we kind of see how the discrimination she, or her family members, face change over time. Additionally, the obstacles she faces are really what challenges her. It gives her motivation and actually helps her find herself. It acts as a catalyst for her life.

the setting of the memoir, the deep south in the mid 20th century is full of lies, stereotypes, and prejudice. throughout the book, Dolores is confronted by many situations where she must react to lies stereotypes, and prejudice. these situations have informed the course of her life. Dolores wouldn’t have been able to write this memoir since these things are what inspired Dolores to discover more about her family in the first place.
