When Why
Mar-24-22 Ilya Kaminsky reads “We Lived Happily During the War”

1 And when they bombed other people’s houses, we

2 protested
but not enough, we opposed them but not

3 enough. I was
in my bed, around my bed America

4 was falling: invisible house by invisible house by invisible house.

5 I took a chair outside and watched the sun.

6 In the sixth month
of a disastrous reign in the house of money

7 in the street of money in the city of money in the country of money,
our great country of money, we (forgive us)

8 lived happily during the war.
