I’m going to examine male sexuality and it what realms of culture are heterosexual males able to tap into sexual performances generally associated with homosexuality. I’m focusing on male sexuality because culturally, one’s heterosexuality is essential to one’s grasp on American manhood. To achieve this, I will analyze heterosexual identifying men within Hollywood, the gay porn industry, and online avenues of sexual cruising for ‘straight’ identifying men. Another aspect of sexual identity I want to trouble is the notion of inclusiveness with sexual fluidity. First, are gay men allowed to move beyond their homosexuality identity and take on performances and behavior associated with heterosexual men? Secondly, are all heterosexual identifying men allowed sexual fluidity with their identity? Is an African-American or Latino man identifying as straight able to carry on same-sex sexual relations without being pigeon held as being on the “down low?” I will argue that gay men and racially marginalized men are not granted sexual fluidity with their sexual identity.
This is interesting because our culture is so rigid and strict when it comes to gender and sexual behavior and identity. If we are moving into a direction of sexual identity fluidity, are there consequences, if so, what are they. Are there benefits, if so, what are they? I think sexual fluidity will give people more options for love seeking in terms of life partners and will take away strict social standards and boxes.
