I think this means that you can have dreams but don’t let your dreams overtake you and become your whole life. You can relate this to wanting something but once you have it you want something else and then it just becomes just something that overtakes your mind and your life.

now that i look closer i think that she wasn’t aloud to wear purple as a child because in the text she is talking about how when she grows up she wants to do things she probably wasn’t aloud to do as a child like sit on the side walk and eat shop samples and press alarm bells, but then she realizes she won’t have time to do all that and that that would be setting a bad example so now she is trying to be good and nice to set a good example so that kids won’t do what she wanted to do when she grew old.
