Paragraph 3 changes

There was a lot to think about and to consider how to apply in the classroom, and in this letter I’d like to focus on why good health and well being is so important in the classroom, because I think sometimes we focus alot on the curriculum and teaching practices, and less on our students mental health and well being. I believe not only our students mental health and well being should be prioritized, but our own mental health and well being as educators so that we can put our best foot forward and create the best classroom environment possible. I think it has become evident and urgent since COVID-19 because we learned that even the smallest of children battle with mental health issues. What was your own experience in learning this? What do you want students to learn? What is it about your students that makes this particularly apt? Why do you think this will be effective?]Personally, I struggled with my mental health during COVID-19 due to a numer of factors. I never struggled with mental health issues before that, so it was a shock. I want my students to learn that this can happen to anyone and that it is okay to be vocal baout it and ask for help. I think this will be effective because it will allow students to gain a better understanding of eachother and learn to be open minded and respectful of one another.

Paragraph 4 changes

I would like to propose that we teach students proper ways to take care of their mental health and well being. I think that students should be comfotable sharing when they are struggling or need guidance. We should uplift eachother as a classroom environment and learn to support one another. Students must know that it is okay to not be okay. This should be an activity conducted in a school setting with one or more students. It should take between 15 and 60 minutes to complete.]

To do this we will need [Make a list of the materials you will need. Your activity can be unplugged or computer/tablet based activity/task. If computer/tablet-based, indicate types of tech tools/platforms students will use. For example: Presentation Software, Voice Recording App or Web Site, Image Library, Video Recording App or Web Site.]to use the website Flip. This platform allows students to document themselves in what will be set up as a weekly journal. Students can take a few seconds or minutes to record themselves and reflect on their week, good or bad. Students can then comment on eachothers posts and provide support for eachother. This will bring the classroom community closer together and form closer bonds. We can work as a classroom to come up with solutions to eachothers problems.

The students will be making [Be specific about the modes and media you will have available for student to use. What choices will they be able to make? Paragraph 7 changes

Here’s how I think we might introduce this activity. We could give these directions to the students:

[Write the step-by-step directions you will be giving the students. Be sure to write this section to the students: e.g. First, you should… First, you should reflect on a time where you felt stressed, sad, or overwhelmed. After that, you will see that… Tell the students when they will be expected to work alone and when they will need to work with other students.]that you are not alone. Everyone has had times where they were not feeling the happiest. Turn to a partner and share your experiences of being stressed, sad, or overwhelmed. What might you say to ypur partners experience?

I would also propose that the students give each other feedback on their work. They could use this checklist to self-assess and to give each other feedback:

This activity should take at least [add the number of minutes it will take here] 60 minutes to complete, which should allow time for productive struggle. To encourage persistence, I think we might [Describe how you might encourage students and give them opportunities to revise and resubmit their work.]practice sharing experiences and practice how we would respond to those experiences. We can also practice using Flip so that the students can work efficiently on the platform independently in the future.

When they have finished this activity, I would be great if we could ask the students to write and talk about how they used one of these [two/three/ four ] Habits of Mind.

Thank you for taking the time to consider this proposal. I hope you see how valuable this activity could be for our students. Please let me know if you have any revisions that I might consider for this activity. I look forward to working with you on this.
